Next Up?
Having completed our first large scale project, the TV studio in the high school, we are examining the needs of the elementary schools for ideas for our next major project. (Given that the middle school is in the middle of a major three year renovation, we thought is best to wait until that is finished before we look for projects there.) Some preliminary ideas:
- Landscaping projects, involving the students working with landscape professionals during which they can learn about landscape architecture, indigenous plants and caring for the environment.
- Financial literacy programs in which students will learn about earning, saving, spending and managing money and other financially responsible behavior.
- Community gardens at each of the schools.
Have an idea? We'd love to hear it. Email your suggestions to Info@HaverfordFoundation.org. Be sure to keep in mind our mission - to cultivate innovative learning opportunities that inspire and motivate Haverford Township students.

Staff Tribute Program Awards New School Mini-Grants Thanks to the donations to our Staff Tribute Program which honors the teachers, administrators, secretaries, nurses, bus drivers, aides, coaches, food service employees, crossing guards and custodians who make contributions to the daily lives of our students, we continue to fund programs which enrich our students' lives. To date this program has awarded over $41,000 for almost 100 grants for innovative programs and projects in the district's schools. Here are our most recently awarded grants: - Audio Books For Reluctant Readers
- Literacy Connections to Everyday Math Lessons
- Artist in Residence Mural Project
- Haverford High School Science Olympiad
 | | A portion of Chestnutwold's proposed mural designed by artist Paul Downie | One of these grants, the Chestnutwold Artist in Residence Mural pictured above, designed by artist Paul Downie, is underway. The basis for the mural is that stories flow around us all the time. Paul Downie has worked with the ideas the students talked about, wrote about, and drew about to create this design that describes those stories that flow from Chestnutwold in particular. In the center of the design is a large Chestnut tree, with the Phoenix at its base. From the tree, the "wind" flows in both directions, carrying with it words and phrases from favorite classic books, Chestnutwold's history, the school song, and words that come directly from the kids' drawings and ideas.
 | | Artist in Residence, Paul Downie, works with students in art class | This project epitomizes the type of project the foundation likes to support - projects which involve the entire school community and which cultivate learning opportunities, here in art, design, reading and writing. Before painting begins, assemblies will be held and the artist will work with students in their art classes. Parents, too, are involved in helping prepare the mural site. Actual painting will begin later this month. To see the full list of all the projects we have funded to date, please visit our Grants Awarded page.
