TV Studio is Now Open for Business
We are very proud to report that our first major project, a
state-of-the-art TV studio in Haverford High School, is now up and
running. Long a dream of the
school district, the studio is now a reality though the efforts and
contributions of the foundation and our supporters. The first classes have already started in the new
multi-media curriculum, teaching journalists of tomorrow in all media: TV,
radio, websites and print. We will communicate the great events going on in all
our schools - in the classrooms, clubs, arts and sports - and in our community,
to our Haverford neighbors. |

Second Annual Foundation Twilight 5k Run and Walk & One Mile Challenge for Kids
Our second annual Twilight 5K Run and Walk was held on April

turnout. New this year - our "One
Mile Challenge" for elementary school children. They competed for the very dramatic Challenge Cup. The winner? Chestnutwold Elementary School! To view the list of winners, please visit the race site at

Foundation Mini-Grant Stories
Want to know what your donations bring to the lives of our
students? Here are two Foundation
success stories:
Author Dan Gutman:
For Haverford's five elementary school librarians, it's all about
reading. That's why they decided to invite children's book author Dan Gutman to
their schools this past spring.
With help from their parent-teacher organizations and the Haverford
Education Foundation, the librarians put it all together and about 2500
elementary school students are very happy they did. Boys and girls alike read 30, 40 and even 50 books before
Gutman arrived. "Kids just can't
get enough of them," Manoa Elementary School librarian Maria Hernandez says,
adding "they appeal to many kinds of students. His books are entertaining and they also tie into the
curriculum." For example,
reading the book "The Kid Who Ran for President" and "The Kid Who Became President"
tied right into this presidential election year. He has also written books about the Great Depression and the
Civil War.
Jayne Dambman, Chestnutwold librarian, lost count of the
number of Gutman's books that were checked out of the library in anticipation
of his arrival. "That's the bottom line for all the schools - making sure
students enjoy reading now and in the future."
Club Isis:
Growing up is hard to do. OK - so there's no getting around that fact,
but Haverford Middle School teacher Kim Alexander and guidance counselor Ronna
Scheier wanted to find a way to give girls the tools they need to make these
transition years a little bit easier - and have fun doing it.
"Girls need a place where they could come and talk about the
things that are bothering them - a safe, caring place," Scheier says.
Throughout the school year, 15 to 20 girls spent an hour or
so together each week in a middle school classroom munching on a few healthy
snacks while taking on more than a few weighty topics. Through open discussion, journal
writing and other exercises, Alexander and Scheier provided their club members
with the tools they need to develop and enhance their self-esteem, communicate
more assertively and be able to navigate the difficult relationship issues that
emerge in middle school. Respect
and support for each other are paramount.
Many studies have examined the impact of programs that focus
on empowering girls with healthy communication skills, tools to resist peer
pressure, facilitate supportive relationships between peers and building
self-esteem based on strengths and abilities rather than physical appearance.
These skills and tool building models have been identified as successful both
in long-term academic and career success, and immediate personal and social
growth. |
Staff Tribute Program Awards New School Mini-Grants
Thanks to the donations to our Staff Tribute Program which
honors the teachers, administrators, secretaries, nurses, bus drivers, aides,
coaches, food service employees, crossing guards and custodians who make
contributions to the daily lives of our students, we continue to fund programs
which enrich our students' lives.
To date this program has raised over $30,000, generated over
1,100 staff tributes and funded over 70 innovative programs and projects.
Here are our most recently awarded grants:
- Fit to Learn
- Literacy Backpacks
- Yoga Kids:
Breathe Life Into Learning (a Virginia S. Murphy Grant for special needs
children)

The Foundation Honors Retiring Teachers
Ten well-loved teachers and three administrators retired
from the School District of Haverford Township this June, but the legacy of
learning these devoted educators leave behind will not soon be forgotten.
To show its gratitude to these teachers, the Haverford
Township School District Education Foundation will continue its tradition of
placing a book of each retiree's choice in one of the school libraries. Administrators Norb Paga, high school
assistant principal Rich Kline, and Rick Henny retired along with teachers Tomi
Mathis, Myra Millrood, Kate deRiel, Karen Penn, Joan Bortnicker, Judy Leib, Joy
Tolar, Mary Ellen Malessa, Carol Dilworth and Bill Cobb. Also this year bus driver Robert Ruff,
reading tutor Sandy Goldenberg and administrative assistant Linda Glancey have
retired but will be remembered with a book in the library of their choosing as
well.
A bookplate inside the front cover tells every child who
checks out one of these books just how special the book is as well as the
person to whom it is dedicated.
This "Legacy Book Project" is organized and funded by a special grant
from the foundation.
"This is a great program," Sue Kratzinger, middle school
librarian said. "Our students will continue to learn and grow when they read
these carefully chosen books, and it is always great to have more books in the
library!" The books are often
favorites of the retirees or reflect the subject they taught or an important
part of their lives. |
