To Everything There Is A Season...
New thoughts on an old song
There has been a song rolling around in my head the past couple of weeks...and I don't know why. Maybe it's the change of the seasons, maybe it's the turning of my mountain bike's wheels, or maybe it's our president's urging that we "become the change". I don't know, but it's "turning" into one of those "close encounter of the third kind" things.

In any case, I thought I would share a little with you. Some remember it from the book of Ecclesiastes. Those folks contend that it was King Solomon's first #1 hit. Most of us remember it as a 1960's hit from the Byrds and I've paraphrased it a bit below:

Turn, Turn, Turn

To everything, turn, turn, turn
There is a season. Turn, turn, turn
And a time to every purpose under heaven

A time to be born, A time to die
A time to plant, a time to reap
A time to laugh, a time to weep

A time to gain, a time to lose
A time to dance, a time to mourn
A time for love, a time for hate
A time for peace, I swear it's not too late.

Now that everyone has gotten their inner Pete Seeger on, maybe it's also a time to give thanks. And that's what I'm going to do as we enter this Thanksgiving & Holiday Season. I would like to thank all of my employees, subs, material suppliers and especially our clients for all of their friendship and support through the years, good times and bad. I wish you all the profound sense of pride and joy (& relief) that comes from accomplishing your goals.

Cash For Clunker Kitchen postmortem:
("a time to die...")

Dearly beloved -- we are gathered here today to pay our final respects to a true clunker of an idea. It seems that no one was too motivated by our $4,500 Cash Back for turning in "that old dilapidated kitchen" idea. However, if you're still considering a kitchen remodel in the near future, give us a call. As the song says, "...I swear it's not too late!"

Aptos High Girls Golf 09"A time to build up..."

A word from the Head Coach -- Aptos High Girls Golf Team (a.k.a. John Fuchs)

On a brighter note, I would like to thank everyone who contributed much needed support to our Aptos High School Girls Golf Team. We could not have had a season without you!

Your generosity was greatly appreciated!

(and blue and red and yellow...)

Maybe it's the turning of the seasons, maybe it's the chill in the air, but it's more likely the impending arrival of holiday guests that has my head "turning" with trying to decide what color to paint the guest room. Have you ever had the lovely yellow on the little paint swatch turn "peachy" on the wall? A blue turn lavender? Or a beige turn to green? I have.

Not willing to succumb to John's solution (paint everything "Navajo White"), I've been reading from a series of articles entitled "Color with Donald Kaufman". A pioneer in the field of architectural color, he has an understandable way of "illuminating" what is going on when that color hits your walls.

Mr. Kaufman says that yellow is the color most easily influenced by what is going on around it (light, surface texture, sheen etc.), which justifies the ten different shades I painted in my living room as I chased the elusive shade I had in mind. He also says that "successful color picking boils down to three critical elements: mock-up, mock-up, mock-up!" The size of the mock-up swatch should be as big as your experience is small. Mine range in the 6' x 6' size.

I'm learning a lot about color (I'm mostly learning humility), but I've yet to try out one of the "green" Low or No VOC paints. I believe that's about to change. Many of the major paint brands offer environmentally friendly paints now, and Benjamin Moore's "Aura" line has a set of 144 beautiful colors - their Affinity Color Palette, that all coordinate with each other. They claim it takes the guess-work out of color matching -- which is good because my guest room walls are not spacious enough to accommodate the mock-up size I need.

Environmentally friendly AND beautiful -- that's what I've been waiting for!

Project Updates
Aptos Flood Restoration:

The new windows and the new kitchen cabinets are in, the wood floor has been installed and we are in the throes of picking out a paint color (Yikes!!! see article above). This home, the victim of a broken hot water pipe, is already looking better than it's "pre-flood" days.

Paradise Park Remodel:

The new family room, deck and bathroom addition has brought light and much-needed square footage to this cozy little cottage in Paradise Park. The skylights lend a glimpse of the old redwoods that tower over the steep and shady lot. Next up -- some lovely wood paneling to match the vintage paneling in the original (c. 1920's) portion of the house.
