News From Jim

Hello All,

I'm home in Iowa now, just back from Ireland, England and Scotland!

A quick run-down: I arrived in Navan, Ireland on August 9th for a 5-Day Advanced and Phase III Course. Our organizer, Katy Davidson did another fantastic job setting up yards (barns).

The Phase III Course resulted in two new Masterson Method Certified Practitioners (MMCP); Monique Peereboom from the Netherlands, and Monika Tolkacz from Poland - Congratulations Monique and Monika!  Monique tells us about herself below, and I'm sure we'll hear from Monika soon.

The Course ended just as the Royal Dublin Horse Show started. This is a big show both in Ireland and the rest of Europe, and has everything from traditional Working Hunter and "In Hand" classes, to FEI Show Jumping. A group of us went to watch on Friday. I was able to spend a couple of pints of Guinness watching the Nation's Cup and visiting with two up and coming Irish Phase II Students, Marie O'Sullivan and Ruth Hassett.  One of my clients, Andrew Bourns and his young horse Adam, finished 4th in the Grand Prix (Yoo Hoo!). Really good placing for that level of competition.

After leaving Ireland, I spent a week with the US Endurance Team in Thetford, England for the World Endurance Championships. Chef d'Equip Emmett Ross and Team Vet, Dwight Hooten led a very strong Team of US riders to a 4th place finish - just short of the Bronze - out of 38 countries. We all had a lot of fun and are looking forward to the World Equestrian Games to be held in Normandy in 2014. Stay tuned!

From there I drove up to Edinburgh, Scotland, for a first time visit, of two days working with MMCP's, before driving south to Devon, UK for a Weekend Seminar and 5-Day Advanced Course. We stayed part of the week in the beautiful village of Totnes, and the rest of the week with Andy and Kathryn at St. Leonard's Equestrian Center in the ancient town of Launceton.

Apart from having a lot of fun, we were able to graduate four more MMCP's; Julie Green, Leigh Jackson and Rosie Hume from England, and Pernille Hansen from Denmark.

Congratulations!  I'll be posting photos on Facebook at .......... as soon as I catch my breath.

While in Devon, I met up with Heather Moffett author of the book, Enlightened Equitation, and spent a day with Gillian Higgins author of, Horses Inside Out. Pretty educational week for me, too.

A big Thank You goes out to Instructor, Diane Howard and UK Course Coordinator, Vicky Devlin for their help with a fun and successful Devon Course. Thank you also to Julie Green for doing all the logistics for the course.

Now that I am home I am hard at work expanding and improving our educational programs, as well as other projects that Cindee has piled on my desk - task mistress that she is! Top of the list is a new curriculum and scoring system for Certification.

Helping with the workload is our newest addition to the team, Jo Bartruff, next door neighbor and friend who we have been trying to get to work with us for a couple of years.   She finally gave in, and her expertise in shipping, receiving and everything else we throw at her is amazing.

Looks like I'll be home for a while - I can unpack now - as I won't be on the road until next month!

Until then, like me, enjoy your horses!

Jim

Like almost every young girl, I started my first riding lessons in a nearby riding school, riding all the nice and easy going horses. I soon got attracted to the horses who were never ridden because of behavior problems.

So, from the early days I was interested in 'the nasty ones' and the horses 'who didn't want to work'.  Because horses aren't born that way I wanted to know why they acted that way and understand a deeper level of the horse - now called horse communication.  In those day's I was considered, 'good with horses'....

Years went by and not having a lot of money for the riding school, my instructor let me ride her clients horses.  Every time I had success with them, I became more interested in the mechanics of what I was really doing.

My parents wanted me to learn a trade for the future. I did some courses for para-veterinarian and worked at several clinics, acupressure, horse massage and stretching, 'natural' veterinary advisor (homeopathy, TCM, phytotherapy, aromatherapy, Bach flower remedy etc) and I become a Reiki Master.

Searching for more knowledge in my local book shop, I saw a DVD of Jim and decided to buy it. I did some techniques and when 'things really happened', that's when I decided I want to learn more about it.  I wrote to the Masterson office and had to wait 1.5 years until a course was organized in Belgium, I was so happy.

In Belgium, I met Jim with his assistant Tamara Yates. I learned a lot from both of them and the silence Tamara used with the horses gave me a big, "ah-ha - that's what I've been doing for years feeling."  Also, 'the softer, the better' was very interesting to me. 'Doing more with less,' was a great sentence for me.

In the year it has taken for me to finish the Phase II part of certification and in doing my case studies, I have met so many people and their horses. I did small horses, big horses, mares, stallions, geldings, one filly, dressage horses, off the track Thoroughbreds , show  jumpers, riding school horses, polo ponies, harness horses, western horses and one donkey.  I love the differences in horses, also in their body structure. Every horse is a new lesson for me and a new path to follow.....it's a journey.

I love to work with veterinarians, chiropractors and physiotherapists to help the horse to a higher level...mentally and physically.......

Monique travels throughout Netherlands, Germany (region Aachen) and Belgium.

Ask Jim Jim at Stanford -equlife

I have read the manual and watched the DVD of the Masterson Method™ a couple of times and I have a question.

When releasing the pole with the HEAD UP (technique 3) both in the manual and in the DVD, I notice that this is only done from the left side. So is this only done from the left or should it be done from both sides? or done one side left or right depending on the side of the tension?

Some thing I have noticed in your book that may need to be corrected. In the quick overview step by step on page 146 for the lateral rocking step 5 and 6 I believe that the left hand should be moving forward onto the ribs as the right hand that is already doing the rocking at the doc

Thank you fore your time it is appreciated.

Have the best day you can as we will never see this day again.

Louwrens Maritz

PS: I think it is great that the manual and dvd are available as there are many talented persons out there but keep the information to themselves and if something happens to them it is lost, so thank you all, especially Jim himself for making it available.

Dear Louwrens,

Very good questions.

The Head Up Technique should be done on both sides. By allowing the horse to relax in the head up position and to the side, we are softening the muscles on top of the poll and on that side of the poll/atlas/TMJ. This gives the horse the opportunity to relax, allows us to massage them in a relaxed state, and to move this junction through a gentle range of motion in a relaxed state (or as relaxed as the horse is able to at that moment.)

In general, we always begin work where it's easiest for the horse, which usually is on the side with the least sensitivity or tension. In my experience, most horses are tighter on the right side of the poll, so I almost always start on the left side.

Regarding page 146, I could try to convince you that I was born with two anatomical right hands but I doubt that you'd buy that. It will be easier for me to point it out to the publisher so that we may be able to change it for the next printing.
I don't want you to think that I become dyslexic around horses.

Thanks for your very observant questions.

New Employee in the
Masterson Equine Services office,
Jo Bartruff

jo

Jo Bartruff, here, helping out in the new Masterson Equine Services office in downtown, Fairfield, Iowa.  I may be new to this office, as their shipping, receiving and all-around-girl-Friday but, I'm not new to Fairfield.  In fact I was born and raised here. I left to attend Iowa State University studying religion, and have also lived in Wyoming (Jim's stomping grounds) and Missouri and then came back to work and play here in this strange and wonderful town.

My experience with horses is simply loving and admiring them from afar.  I was one of those adolescent girls who liked to draw them all the time!  I had a huge collection of porcelain horses of all shapes and sizes on the shelves in my room.  I always wanted to have a horse but I never had the opportunity.  When I was studying at Iowa State University, I used to walk by the horse husbandry barn on my way to and from campus.  There was a horse that was in quarantine (unbeknownst to me) away from the herd.  I came up to him thinking that he was a friendly guy, and reached out to pet him and he bit me on the stomach.  Man did that hurt and I'll never forget it!

Needless to say, I've been a little shy ever since.  Life has a quirky way of putting you in the midst of your fears sometimes, doesn't it?   Maybe now that I'm working at Masterson Equine Services, I'll get a chance to at least pet some horses again without getting chomped and maybe I'll even get to feel what it's like to ride one without fear.

Well, anyway, I look forward to getting an e-mail or phone call from you if you'd like me to send you Jim's book or a dvd or if you have any questions.  Happy Trails!
Jo

A Testimonial on the Weekened Seminar-Workshop with Coralie Hughes:

Coralie, I would just like to say thanks again for your outstanding effort teaching the Masterson Method at the Jackson Farm. I was able to gain knowledge you just cannot get from the DVD or book!

Since returning home, I have had great success with my own horses - the results have been unbelievable! Your class was truly informative and much appreciated. Please pass along my thanks to the assistants Kim and Della also.

Sincerely, Pat O' Brien

Another Ask Jim Question:

Jim in Belgium

How do equine massage and chiropractic relate and interact?

Just to be sure, I consulted my dictionary on this one. A quick look gives the definition of chiropractic as follows,

"a system of complimentary medicine based on the diagnosis and manipulative treatment of misalignments of the joints, esp. those of the spinal column, which are held to cause other disorders by affecting the nerves, muscles, and organs."

The definition of massage is;

"the rubbing and kneading of muscles and joints of the body with the hands to relieve tension or pain."

So, in short, I think how chiropractic and massage relate is that traditional chiropractic focuses on making adjustments to the skeleton to cause a release of tension in muscles that may be creating skeletal imbalance and misalignments, whereas traditional massage focuses on directly massaging the muscles to release tension, that may be creating the imbalances and misalignments in the skeleton. Both are complimentary and are aimed at restoring balance to the body, but from different angles.
