 News From Jim
Hello All,
Lots of news. First, we have a new Masterson Method Certified Practitioner in Denton near Dallas, Texas. Vanessa Helvey just completed Phase III Course at Austin with flying colors. Congratulations Vanessa! More about her below. The winter horse show season in Florida has wound down, and competitors from many disciplines have headed north. I'm home in Iowa for most of April. It was a fun season, with the best of the best US riders competing in a series of Olympic Jumping Trials in Wellington for positions on the 2012 US Olympic Jumping Team coming up this summer in England. The selection process continues. You can find the standings here. I had a chance to hook up with some of my friends on the US Singles Driving Team at the Black Prong Equestrian Center in north central Florida, where some of the best Driving competitors come to train and compete for the winter months. Robin Groves, Donna Crookston and Kim Stover have another shot at the US Singles Team competing in Portugal this summer. I was able to catch up with Pandor (from the 2011 Pan Am Endurance Championships in Chile) and Juniper (2010 World Equestrian Games in Lexington, KY) both owned and ridden by Deb Reich, and with the amazing Meg Sleeper's horses Cadie ( 2011 Pan Am Endurance Championships), Harmon (2010 WEG in Lexington) and Reveille (2008 World Endurance Championships in Malaysia). We are all hoping she will compete at the 2012 World Endurance Championships in England this coming (let me look at my calendar...) August! It was exciting to meet Peter Atkins in Ocala this winter and work on his two horses Henny and Drake. Peter and Henny were on the Australian Eventing Team at the WEG in Lexington in 2010 (it seems like just last year) and are going for the 2012 Australian Olympic Eventing Team this summer. If you are on Facebook you can go his page, Run Henny Run, where you can follow his progress. On You Tube, you can watch a helmet-camera view of Peter and Henny competing the cross-country event at the 2010 WEG. It's really amazing to watch what it's like to jump that impressive course! I'm hoping to hook up with them in England this summer before the Olympics. The big news is, in addition to Olympics and the World Endurance Championships, also going on this summer in England and Ireland are Masterson Method Seminars and Courses! (It was a little tricky, but we were able to schedule them so as not to draw too many spectators away from the Olympics.) If you're looking for an equestrian vacation our courses in Devon and Ireland are beautiful places to spend a week learning to work on horses. We're at a different barn (yard) every day, and we usually find ourselves at a different pub each day for lunch (no extra charge for the pub tour). Finally, we're gearing up our efforts to promote Beyond Horse Massage, book and dvd and seminars by - among other things - doing more presentations at events like the Equine Affaire and regional horse fairs around the country. We'll let you know via this newsletter, but also keep up with our Facebook page. I'm being nudged to keep it updated. There you'll find some important things, and always fun things. If you find that we'll be at an equine event near you, come on down! If you'd like to help man the booth, answer questions, just talk to people about horses, feel free to contact us. Until then, like me, Enjoy your horses! Jim

New Certified Practitioner
Vanessa Helvey, Denton, Texas
Even though I grew up riding with my parents on their horses, it wasn't until much later in life that I became enamored with these magnificent creatures. Previous to helping with the Denton CVB's famed North Texas Horse Country Tours, I didn't know much about horses or their care. However, after helping with my first tour I became obsessed like little girls do. I became passionate about educating myself about the many breeds, disciplines and riding styles. I read books about how to ride (not so helpful) and became frustrated in not being able to afford to buy my own horse. I almost had one given to me, but she exhibited tendencies that I now know were signs of discomfort in the body, and it led me to study anatomy, biomechanics and fitness. I came across Jec Ballou's book "Equine Fitness" and stumbled upon Jim's techniques. I had many older horses at my disposal and decided to try the Masterson Method™ on them. It was a way to bond with a horse without being on his back and I became hooked. I decided to go through with the certification process and am so happy that I did! Now that I finally have my own horse, I know I can keep her feeling comfortable and happy in her body for many years to come. Happy horses work hard for us humans! My journey is just beginning, and though the bodywork certification came before the horse, I would not have it any other way. Poetry from a Phase I Participant
It began in Hutto, Texas, where we all met. We all brought hopes of more learning to get. The Masterson Method, was what brought us all here. We came from a variety of places, some far and some near. It started with flexion in the neck and the poll. It grew to include a lumbar rock and a sternum roll. The group was led by a special man named Jim. We also go me to meet a very thin model named Slim. Our instructors were patient and kept our spirits lifted. It was clear to us all, how they're so gifted. The love of the horse is what we all shared. We all wanted to learn skills to show how we cared. We looked for a blink, the lick and the chew. Who ever thought that a yawn, would teach us what to do. Our week was lead by great instructors and the best teacher, the horse. It must be said, the support of each other was great, of course. I know I will always think of the week with a smile. I hope that we have the opportunity to meet again in a while. In gratitude, the experience as a whole - Includes the barns, the horses and each other, as we move towards the goal. And with sincerity I say from inside. Bless all your hearts!!!! Phase I course, TX 2012 |

Ask Jim:

Dear Jim,
I wanted to know if it is ok to massage a horse before the horse does a lesson. Would this have an effect on how he does during the lesson? If not, when is the optimum time for massage?
It's alright to do massage on the horse before a light workout or lesson. Gentle movement after the massage is generally good. However, any big changes you make in the horse during massage could affect the way the horse moves, so it is not recommended to work on the horse for the first time just before an important class, for example.
But, if the work the horse is doing isn't strenuous and the massage isn't major, it will be ok. Ideally, for any deep work on the horse, postpone any serious riding afterwards, it is best to work on him the day before, let him move around a little afterwards, such as in turnout, then ride the next day.
Hope this helps. Keep up the good work!

Tip of the Month from Vanessa Helvey We all want to look like Jim doing the Poll Release, Head Up technique, but it takes patience to get the horse to "melt" into you, especially if they are guarded in the poll - and many older horses are. Some horses have so much tension it is hard for them to relax enough to give you the weight of their head. What happens is we try and force it, asking too much of them before removing the necessary layers, and they evade by pulling their head away, bracing or running over us.
Instead of immediately placing the horsey head on your shoulder, get the horse to lower his head by slowly searching (millimeter by millimeter) for a blink on top of the poll. Stay there with air-gap pressure and see if you can't get the horse to come down to you. This may take some time! And once you've got the head where you want it - either resting on your shoulder or in the crux of your arm - ease into massaging the poll. Continue air-gap until the horse is completely giving you his head, then you can progress in the amount of pressure you're applying, find any knots, and work them out! |
Testimonial:
Dear Mr. Masterson,
I just received your DVD and book in the mail yesterday and watched part of the DVD that covered the Bladder Meridian Technique. I tried it on my horse today and was absolutely amazed by the results. He is a recently retired racehorse that I just got 10 days ago.
Unfortunately, he has a nasty habit of trying to bite when you touch him. After performing just a portion of the Bladder Meridian Technique, he was yawning and stretching. His whole demeanor seemed to change. He allowed me to approach him without pinning his ears back and was quite receptive. No biting! I can't wait to try it again tomorrow. I now feel that we are going to be alright together.
Thanks so much, Anne Celner

Testimonial Last night at around 11:00 pm when it was really quiet at the barn and I'd finished my nightly check I decided to try the sacrum float technique on my pony, Capri. Please tell Jim for me that I got the same little head twitches and small jerks that he did once I released her tail and stepped back to see what she thought! I was so excited. It's almost like she's asleep when that's happening. After a minute or two, she yawns and then turns and looks at me. I did this with her at complete liberty in the corral around my horse shelter. She could have left at any time.
His method is truly phenomenal - horses don't lie! I am looking forward to learning more about it and to seeing him when he's in TX again.
Thanks, Anna Perkinson
