News From Jim

Hi Everyone,

Yesterday the pond froze over for the first time this year... and it hasn't thawed yet! This might be it for the winter...

However, it was sunny and calm this morning so I was able to convince both Annabelle AND Jeremiah (my Morgan team) to drive downtown for coffee with me.

The Holidays are around the corner, and as much as I don't want to hit you over the head with marketing, I do want you to have my book in your reference library. I really do think it is a good tool to bring to the barn with you when you are working on your horse (or reindeer)!

But Wait... There's more! (Doesn't that sound familiar?)  Along with the book, I would recommend the companion DVD which gives you the feel of each exercise.  I think both are essential - of course I would, wouldn't I?

So, for the month of December, we are offering  the book and DVD together at 15% off regular price, plus shipping.  With this offer you will receive a signed copy of the book, Beyond Horse Massage and the companion DVD, with enough left over ($10.25) for at least two double tall mocha latte's while you read your new book.  Click here to be directed to our Masterson Method Store

We want to extend this offer to our overseas friends, but although coffee prices may be the same, book shipping from the US is over-the-top expensive.

However our UK and European friends can purchase the book from J. A. Allen Equestrian Publishers! with free shipping and 30% off the published book price.  And for our Australian friends, we have a link for you too!  (see below)

Shipping on the DVD from the US is still reasonable, so all our overseas friends can still buy the DVD directly from us if you'd like.

One of our Phase II students, Becky Tenges from Wisconsin, assisted at the Weekend Seminar at the at the Maker's Mark Secretariat Center - Thoroughbred Adoption Network in Lexington, KY last month. As it happens, my partner Bill Stanton was there for the Alltech National Horse Show and Maclay Finals. Becky was able to spend some time with both of us working on horses competing at this last indoor Hunter/Jumper Show of the season, and has shared with us her perspective of the experience below.

We'd like to announce the addition of our latest Masterson Method™ Certified Practitioner in the UK, Rachel Boase. Rachel lives in southwest England and is a talented healer of both humans and horses. Rachel completed certification at our course in Cornwall, England in October. You can learn more about Rachel below.

And finally, we had an interview with our publisher (I like the way that sounds) posted on their website.  You can read it here, on the right hand side below the Calendar of Seminars. Enjoy!

Have a Merry Christmas and Very Happy Holidays!

Like me, enjoy your horses!

Jim

The Masterson Method: becky tenges
My Entre to Touching Greatness

Hi.  My name is Becky Tenges and I am presently working my way through Phase II of the Masterson Method of Integrated Equine Performance Bodywork™.

So here's a question very few people can ask: What do McLain Ward, Rodrigo Pessoa, Bruce Springsteen, Jim Masterson...and me...all have in common?

The answer: All five of us were at the Altech National Horse Show that was held at the Kentucky Horse Park during the first week of November. And all five of us were completely focused on Saturday night November 5th. Rodrigo and McLain were riding in the Grand Prix. Bruce was in the audience watching his 19 year old daughter, Jessica, ride Cincinnati Le Silla to a 3rd place finish, beating out both Rodrigo and McLain.

And Jim and I...what were we focused on? Well, for those of you who have been to one of Jim's seminars, we were doing what he teaches in his Masterson Method™. We were touching horses: searching for reactions and restrictions; watching for the horses' responses; releasing stress; improving range of motion...and all of this before these equine athletes were set to compete in the Grand Prix, the Maclay Finals and other National Horse Show classes leading up to those two major events.

Now for Jim, perhaps, the novelty of having the opportunity to work on this caliber horse has worn off...but for me?   Not so much. This was definitely an amazing experience. Not in a million years and never in my lifetime could I have had this opportunity...not until I began the certification process in the Masterson Method™ and not until Jim put the wheels in motion for me to shadow his Florida-based partner, Bill Stanton, as he and Jim worked on the horses of Bill's clients, as an adjunct to my assisting at the Masterson Method™ Weekend Seminar which also took place during the National Horse Show.

Of course it was pretty cool (and gave me great bragging rights to my 13-year old daughter) to get up close to these equine celebrities and their riders. But, truly, what was the most amazing part for me? I was afforded the opportunity to observe Jim and Bill, these two amazingly gifted men, working on some of the world's best horses, bringing release and relief to these equine superstar athletes prior to and after their competitions.

Rachel Boase,
New Certified Practitioner, UK.

The Masterson Method™ is a valuable addition to my equine practice, and my work with horses has become much more effective through learning with Jim and utilising the techniques / principles on an ongoing basis.  A Big Thank You to Jim for sharing your experience and to the horses.

From a young age I was inspired by time with the horses on visits to my family in Scotland who brought over the Appaloosa from Argentina and whose part bred American Quarterhorses were then all reared in Argyll. Since then, and my first pony, I have ridden on the Argentine pampas with gauchos, on trails in Scotland and Spain, and helped exercise event horses at home in Wiltshire. I also have an interest in natural horsemanship.

With a lifelong passion for horses, anatomy and biomechanics, I am pleased to integrate skills acquired over 20 years of human bodywork with my equine bodywork, finding many are transferable. Being guided by the horse's response it is possible to visibly see and feel them release tension as they show us areas needing work. It is very rewarding for both horse and practitioner.

It's really great to now be certified in Masterson Method™ as well as Equine Craniosacral Therapy and Shiatsu. The techniques I employ are hands-on, non invasive, and therapeutic and considered helpful with both physical and behavioral health issues in the horse. Treatment forms part of preventative therapy for the equine athlete, helping to maintain good health and aiding in speedy recovery from injury. From the initial evaluation the best modalities and techniques to help each horse become clear. I always seek an inclusive approach with other members of the team who care for the horse thus helping achieve improved health and performance, as well as winning results for the competition horse.

My practice is based in the southwest of England with horses and humans and I also travel extensively to visit clients elsewhere.

Fun Interview
with Jim

Trafalgar Books interviewed Jim for their on-line blog.  Here is a snippet from that interview:

TSB:  Your driving horse Annabelle appears at the end of your book BEYOND HORSE MASSAGE, and you allude to the fact that she, along with your local pub, have been instrumental in the development of the book and now the DVD. Tell us about this horse of yours-how did you meet? How long have you pursued driving as an activity?

JM: I have two Morgans who were given to me as youngsters by an interesting woman here in Iowa who grew up Amish. They're brother and sister, and I trail ride and drive them both. Jeremiah's not much of an urbanite (come to think of it, no one in Iowa is) and prefers to stay out of town, but Annabelle will take me into town for a cup of coffee with my buddies at the Amoco station, and occasionally to a local restaurant with a very nice bar and a tree out front-for a beer and a flake or two. I try to limit her to three (flakes), as she sometimes has to drive home. This came in handy during the book as the stress of meeting multiple deadlines grew.

Here's what one of our readers said about the book:

I received your new book in the mail yesterday afternoon.  I'm having the hardest time deciding what to do - get out to my horse,
or continue reading and learning!  I LOVE the book and can't wait to
get out to see the results for my horses.  Your book is so easy to read and understand.
