News From Jim
 Hi Everyone, Please take a moment to check the Calendar Page and right hand column of this newsletter. You will note that we have added some new seminars. I don't often get to toot my own horn about my hometown, Fairfield, Iowa, however, the September 3rd and 4th, Labor Day weekend seminar will be right here in Fairfield. Being a small, sleepy town in the Midwest you wouldn't think it would be considered the "Berkeley of the Midwest" in terms of entrepenurial spirit, organic and sustainable living practices and progressive political leaders - all in a town of 10,000. The best part of having a seminar and 5-day Phase I Certification course in Fairfield, is that I get to sleep in my own bed! We have also opened up an additional weekend seminar in the UK in Cornwall and a Phase I and III directly following. Zoe Milne will be registering participants for those courses as she is our newest member of the Masterson Method administrative team. Welcome Zoe! She will be our European Seminar Coordinator. Zoe and Diane Howard will both be helping me teach the Cornwall course and will be available to teach 2-day seminars in the UK and Europe after October. Speaking of the UK, we have a new Certified Practitioner in the UK; Sue Harwood, you can read all about her below. Congratulations Sue! Sue has also given us her, "Tip of the Month." Lastly, we are considering going to Australia in April and are asking for input about venues to hold 2-day seminars. We would like to gauge interest before we book the trip. If you have ideas for venues or if you would like us to know of your interest in participating in a 2-day seminar in Australia, please let us know where you live and hopefully we can create a seminar close to you. Email mastersonmethod@lisco.com if you have a venue in mind and/or if you would like to participate in a 2-day seminar. Until next month, like me, enjoy your horses. Jim

The Masterson Minute
with Jim Masterson
Jim takes about a minute (well, a little bit more) to explain the direction of bodywork on a horse - starting with the left front and ending at the left hind, and why.

New UK Certified Practitioner;
Sue Harwood
I have been around horses almost my whole life, from working at a local riding school when I was eleven, getting rides on anything and everything, just as a lot
of kids do.
I have competed in showing, dressage, driving trials, as well as breaking and bringing on youngsters, retraining horses, in fact almost anything that involved horses - except jumping - I like to keep my feet firmly on the ground! My passion for horses has led to trail riding in Montana, Colorado and North Carolina; riding Arab stallions in Egypt; Conemara ponies in Ireland; driving singles and pairs up to national level - and eventually, through looking for treatments for my elderly Thoroughbred mare, to training with Jim Masterson
Since beginning to work with Jim in late 2010, I have worked on over 50 horses, and have a well-established client base. I have worked on horses from many different competitive backgrounds - showjumpers, dressage horses, polo ponies, as well as Pony Club and Riding Club horses, and hunters. I also work on "Happy Hackers", on arthritic horses, elderly horses, horses on box rest - and everything from Shetland ponies to Shire horses. I work throughout the UK and Ireland, and am happy to travel almost anywhere!
I can be reached via email: sue.harwood@lineone.net or via my website: www.equineperformancebodywork.org

"Tip of the Month"
from Sue Harwood
The more I work on horses, the more I am coming to realize just how important the whole lumbar region is for transferring the power generated by the hind end up through the rest of the horse, and particularly the role of the psoas muscle. But because it is relatively difficult to get to, and it is easier to work on other areas such as the poll and front or hind legs, we sometimes overlook the importance of freeing up the lumbar area. I use a whole range of techniques - accordion, lateral rocking, manipulating the hind legs - to release these muscles, and usually find the horse reacts really well, and subsequent feedback from owners and trainers has confirmed how much it improves the horse's movement |
