Jim and Chase 3

News From Jim

Jim Masterson
Hi Everyone,

I'm home now, moving back and forth between the hammock to the desk, finishing up the final edit of the book and catching up on rest.

I enjoyed June in Ireland and England working on courses and horses. The weather was great (really!)  Between courses I worked on Irish Sport Horses at a beautiful farm in Galway, Ireland and then went to England to visit old friends in Filey and got my hair cut at the local pub.  How's that for convenience.

We did courses in Dublin, Bristol, Wittering and Devon which was one of the prettiest places I've yet seen in England (so far!). In Devon we worked on Dartmoor ponies, whose relatives roam wild on the moors of Dartmoor National Park in Devon (definition moor1 |ˈmoŏr |noun - a tract of open uncultivated upland; a heath).

During Phase I of the Certification course in Devon, we also worked on horses of International Endurance Rider, Iona Rossely; The Mare and Foal Sanctuary; Bicton College; and Budleigh Salterton Riding School. I'll post photos on Masterson Method FaceBook - soon!

We have quite a few new Certified Practitioners now in Ireland and the UK.  We've spotlighted two here, and will have more in the next newsletter. The Masterson Method™ is getting truly universal (or at least multi-continental!)

I am really excited about the seminar in Hawaii in August!  I have a bunch (pod, passel, herd?)  of family there that I can't wait to see. If you've wanted a vacation, bring your family. They can chill with the turtles at the beach while we commune with horses at the barn.

Finally, due to a high demand, we have opened up another Phase I course here in Fairfield, Iowa in September.  This way I can stay home and teach at the same time!  We only have a couple spots left, so if you are waiting to find a Phase I, this is the last one of the year in the US.

Check my Facebook page. I PROMISE I'll update it a soon as this editing of the book is done.

Until then, like me, enjoy your horses.

Certified Practitioner!

Katy Davidson, Ireland and Scotland

Born and raised in the Scottish countryside horses have been a large part of my life. With an early association with these graceful animals, I began riding at a very young age becoming involved in all things 'equine'.

I spent four years at Queen Margaret University College in Edinburgh completing a BSc (Hons) in Occupational Therapy.  While there, I developed a keen interest in complementary therapies, gaining a qualification in, and practicing, 'Seated Acupressure Massage'.  I am also qualified in holistic and Indian head massage,  regularly treating riders alongside their horses.

Whilst in New Zealand in 2003 I completed my equine massage training and began working on Olympic standard dressage and show jumping yards. On my return to the UK I set up my own business, studying and training with Equinenergy to complete certification in Anatomy and Physiology, Equine Body Work Certificate and Advanced massage.  In 2010 I completed an Equinology course, qualifying in Equine Myofascial Release.  I began my Masterson Method journey in 2009 with the 2-day seminar, Stage 1, and have never looked back.  The techniques I learned on that one weekend enhanced my work so much that I decided to pursue certification to Stage 3 level, which I achieved in June 2011.  The gentle but effective techniques have proved beneficial to so many horses and the results have been fantastic, improving performance, flexibility and overall wellbeing.

I work between Ireland and Scotland with both performance and leisure horses. I also work with horses returning from injury and can work with owners to develop individualised rehabilitation programmes.

New Masterson Method™

Certified Practitioner,

Sheaffe Monteith, Ireland

SheaffeFor me, the Masterson Method™ has taught me so much, not just physical hands-on techniques but a way to communicate with horses on a much deeper level - emotionally, mentally and even spiritually.  Equine bodywork enables change in opposite ends of the scale, from immensely stoic little ponies, big heavy drafts, highly strung thoroughbreds on their toes for the next race, and then everything in between.

If you need to find a way to speak to these noble and majestic animals at all these levels, then choose the Masterson Method™. In a short space of time it is possible to release tension in key junctions of the horse with some simple hand techniques. Equine trust is fostered from the gentleness of this system.

Using the Masterson Method™, I have found a very effective way of working with and helping horses.

I am available to see horses in the Leinster area of Ireland and you can contact me on +353-87-2034236, email shantocentre@gmail.com or visit www.shanto.ie.

"Tip of the Month"

From Sheaffe Monteith

I have found that creating naturalness from your 'intention' has been a big factor in my success with horses. In the past I have sometimes gone in the stall all 'guns blazing', thinking about the issues too much and what I need to do to 'fix' the horse. Unless the horse is well-used to people and bodywork, chances are they will completely ignore you, brace up, or even have difficulty lifting a leg, never mind achieving a good scapula release!

If you are having trouble 'connecting' with your equine client, soften your intention. In your mind (even speak out loud if it helps!), say to yourself what you are going to do.  If all you want to do is lift a leg, or bring the nose around an inch, or watch for a blink, then avoid 'wanting' an immediate scapula drop, full cervical lateral flexion or ten yawns! When you do get the leg lift, nose bend, or blink, stay content in that moment with what you have achieved. Maybe this is all you will achieve that day, but the next day you can enhance your intention because you have achieved something naturally without force. This goes for all your work with horses, not just bodywork.

Try it out and see what happens! It is a strategy that has worked for me on many challenging horses.
