News From Jim Hi everyone, I am happy to report that the, "book is in the can." I guess that's really not the correct idiom for the completion of a book, except if you are trashing it! Kidding aside, the Masterson Method™ book is finally finished and in the capable hands of Martha Cook, of Trafalgar Press (Horse and Rider Books.) The book is due out in the Fall of 2011. Those last minute details were the hardest, especially with a deadline over your head. With hundreds of photographs and 66,000 words, the smallest mix-up can mean a photo showing up at the wrong place. Stefanie Reinhold has been amazing formatting the book and helping me to write it. Now, the New Year can begin in earnest for Stef and me. Speaking of New Year's, this is the year that we want to promote the Masterson Method™ nationally, through television, print and internet promotions. We are currently talking with a production company about the possibility of creating a television show or a long-form commercial, placing it on cable and the internet. We want to get the message out to as many people as possible about these techniques and the by-product of the relationship created between you and your horse while using this bodywork. My goal is to reach horse owners, thus helping as many horses as possible. On that note, we are planning on creating many more seminars in 2011 using the talents of Tamara Yates and Stefanie Reinhold as instructors. If you would like to host a seminar, please contact us with your venue ideas. I am off to California to teach the first 2011 Certification Course at Stanford University and then heading to Florida to work on client's horses at the Winter Equestrian Festival in West Palm Beach. I actually like the cold weather, but I only enjoy a few weeks of it before I head South for the winter season. If you don't like the cold weather, join me at the Wellborn, Florida Weekend Seminar-Workshop the 29th and 30th of January on my way South. Wellborn is near Jacksonville, Florida. Looking forward to 2011, and, like me, enjoy your horses. Jim

Ask Jim:
Dear Jim, I have a five year old Arab (recently purchased) who has a lovely nature and is very affectionate. He had terrible teeth when he arrived and I have been carrying out regular treatments on him. I attribute his various and sometimes strange reactions to the bodywork to his teeth problem. When I am using egg yolk pressure down his neck, he opens his mouth (not quite yawning) and leans into me. He also has the same reaction when I bit him. I have been doing TMJ work, cervical flexion, massage and stretching to the neck but he still keeps doing it. Should I be looking elsewhere?? Many thanks, Caroline Hi Caroline, With what you described, I think that the TMJ and poll area might be a safe call, considering his responses and the state of his teeth when he arrived. But even if you aren't sure what the primary cause might be, you can still use the responses of the horse to guide you in your bodywork. I would certainly continue doing what you're doing. In addition, I would suggest taking advantage of the Head Up Technique to give him time to just rest his head on your shoulder and relax. This often works wonders relaxing the poll, atlas and TMJ junction, and upper neck. Plus, they really like it!
A couple of things to keep in mind: Even if you've taken care of the teeth issue, tension may have been building there for a long time and helping him release it may be a gradual process. In addition to working on the area that's bothering him, there are other areas that you can work on that will help. Front Leg (Scapula) Releases and Lower Neck Flexions will help release tension on the poll. There are major muscles that insert at the poll junction on one end, and at the foreleg on the other. Additionally, there is a strong connection between the atlas and sacrum. Releasing tension on the sacrum with Hind End Release Points (especially the points under the tail) and the Hind Leg Releases will help with the tension up front. I hope this helps. Please let me know how it goes. Jim

A Testimonial from Austria
I'm combining the Masterson Method™ with my cranio sacral work and to me this is the PERFECT match!
I start every treatment with the bladder meridian, because it's relaxing, a good 'priority marker' and shows me the way and how the horse wants to communicate with me. Before I met Jim, I knew about the bigger signs of release: the licking, the chewing, the yawning and snorting. But, it was the Masterson Method™ that taught me to listen to the small, subtle signs, which helped me to improve my results - especially with horses that seemed to be quite a challenge to treat. I suddenly realized that they weren't just nervous or busy with other stuff during my treatments - they were actually giving me valuable information!
I was working at a horse show and I was asked to look at a Quarter Horse gelding that seemed stiff at the trot - just about an hour before his next class!
By simply applying all that I had learned from Jim, I soon found a spot behind his left shoulder, on the M. serratus ventralis thoracis, right after the scapula, where he started blinking and fidgeting. I softly stayed on this spot and soon he softened his eyes and even closed them for a minute or two. He was totally relaxed and gave a series of releases.
During the whole session, which took about 15 minutes, he had shifted his weight to the right and moved his left leg around a little bit. When I felt that no more major releases were coming, I ended the treatment by giving him a short, vitalizing massage and he was ready to go - and he won the All Around Championship that day!
This is just one story about how wonderfully the Masterson Method™ combines with all the other methods and techniques that I use.
Greetings to the whole team from Austria.

Tip of the Month - Actually, Two Tips from Janet Bailey, MMCP
If a horse is very restricted through the atlas/poll/C1 area and has difficulty even beginning to do lateral flexion, break it down into very tiny steps.
For example, on the horse's left side, put your right hand very, very lightly on the horse's cheek or atlas and with the left hand, very softly just give the horse a suggestion of turning his nose. Be very, very soft and wait - let the horse come away from your left hand itself to give you a mini start for lateral flexion. This works very well for tight, emotional horses.
You will be surprised at how many releases you can get from repeating this mini exercise (when you may only get a half inch or inch of movement). However, if you stay really soft with your hands and do no more than suggest the mini lateral flexion, after several repetitions you will suddenly find that the horse has moved itself through the restriction and you can easily get to the full lateral flexion exercise! Tip #2 For older horses with arthritis that have trouble picking up their back feet so the farrier can work on them, do the 11:00 and 1:00 points around the anus to loosen up the back end.
This will help release the hindquarter muscle tension caused by the arthritis and often enables the horse to relax that area enough that its feet can be worked on. But, remember to use egg yolk or even air-gap pressure!
