News From Jim Jim Masterson

Hi everyone,

Happy Holidays!  Jingle, Jingle, Jingle!  I put my sleigh bells on Annabelle's buggy today to get in the Holiday mood for my morning drive to town for coffee.  It's getting a little nippy out there for much more of this in Iowa, but I am trying to squeak by a couple more times.

With the Holidays on my mind: For those of you, who, like me, don't relish standing in long lines to shop, you might consider taking a look at our Shopping Cart,  it sure beats finding a place to park at the mall.  For those who have taken my weekend seminar-workshop, you might also consider the Whole Horse Video series that we sell out of the home office.  Nancy or Conley can take your order over the phone or you can email them your interest.  They are not available to the general public as they are unedited sessions of work done on horses at the Winter Equestrian Festival.   They are best used by those that have taken my foundation seminar as I use terms that would be unfamiliar to those not having attended one.

On a sad note, as many of you may have already heard, Tamara Yates has decided to step down as Director of Certification. As all of you who have worked with her know, she does an amazing job and puts a huge amount of time and energy into her work. She has decided to focus more of that energy on her business at home. Luckily, she will continue teaching for me when she's available. Her shoes will be very hard to fill.

In the meantime, Stefani Reinhold will be helping me to fill them. Stefani was my first Masterson™ Certification Practitioner graduate, teaches Masterson Method™ seminars, and is currently working on the Masterson Method™ book with me (to be published in 2011 by Trafalgar Square - Horse and Rider Books - hooray!)

Speaking of Certification, we have a new practitioner in the Phoenix, Arizona area, Carla Meeske, read all about her in this newsletter.

I am looking forward to 2011.  Thanks to all of you for making 2010 such a great year!

Like me, enjoy your horses.

Jim

Hi Jim,

My horse has pain and tension in the poll and atlas, and I am wondering what might be causing it?

Often soreness or tension we are working on in the body is related to some other, primary issue. If you can determine the primary issue and deal with it, then it will help you keep the secondary pain from coming back. You can also use these signs in the body to find related small issues before they become large issues.

We talk a lot about tension in the poll because the poll is one of the most important junctions of the horse as far as performance goes. Also, the poll can be affected by many issues in the body.

For example, front foot pain will create pain and tension in the poll and atlas, usually corresponding to the side that has the foot pain. Tension will also eventually accumulate in the neck, and if left long enough, the lower neck on the opposite side will often show up.

Another area that I've found correlates to front foot pain is the pain in pectorals in the girth area, on the same side as the foot pain. So you have a few indicators there of front foot pain.

Another example: I've found that pain on the top of and just behind the poll often goes with a sore back. If you have pain in this area, but no front feet indicators then you might want to look at the back for signs of soreness.

Severe TMJ pain can radiate into the entire area of the poll, so there is a definite connection between dental issues and the poll and atlas.

So why am I talking so much about feet and necks and pecs and backs? Because the whole horse's body is inter-connected. If you want to find what might be causing soreness in the horse's body, it helps to fit together the pieces of the puzzle that match. These pieces of the puzzle can help give you a picture of what's going on with the horse's body as a whole. These are some of the things that our Certification students learn in the 5 Day, Phase 1 Course.
