News From Jim By the time you read this, I will be in Europe, teaching with Tamara Yates our Director of Certification and Continuing Education. We are both excited to be teaching across the pond! We start out our travels in the UK with two seminars and then we head to Germany, Belgium and end up in the Emerald Isle of Ireland for a weekend seminar and a Phase I Certification Course. You can follow our travels by becoming a fan on my Facebook page under Masterson Method.
I will be making a side trip to help Robin Groves and Donna Crookston both of
whom have made the US Singles Driving Team. They will both be in Holland training for the event in Rome at the end of July. Then, to the World Equestrian Festival, CHIO
Aachen, Germany where I will be a spectator and possibly be needed by a client showing there.
On a completely separate note, but equally as important to me, I am really happy that both my Certified Instructors, Tamara Yates and Stefanie Reinhold have now taught weekend seminar-workshops. We are now scheduling both instructors to teach seminars for the rest of the year. This fits perfectly with my mission of reaching out to as many people as we can so that more horses can benefit from these techniques and more people can grow their relationships with their horses. Read below about one of our newest MM Certified Practitioners, Tamara Parr from Beaver Dam, Wisconsin.
Hope to see you when I get back from Europe, like me, enjoy your horses. Jim

New MM Certification Practitioner Tamara Parr, Beaver Dam, Wisconsin
Tamara (Tami) Parr was born with a love
of horses that had her riding & training green broken horses by the age of
10. Like many of us, marriage and
family, put this passion on hold for a time. She found an outlet for her
passion as a volunteer at a local horse rescue. A diverse work background
prepared her well for the varied physical and mental challenges she would see
there. A former educator of young children, elder health care provider, and
veterinary assistant, who now works in information technology, she was soon
maintaining the rescue website, performing physical & mental evaluations,
& rehabilitating horses. She knew there had to be more that could
be done to reach these amazingly sensitive creatures. Her search for a better
way, lead her to Jim Masterson, and the Masterson Method™. The gentle 'search' approach, identifiable 'response'
queues given by the horse, 'staying'
in the areas indicated, and then the 'release'
given by the horse when tension & restriction abated, were the ground
breaking keys she had been seeking. A new level of thought and touch, combined with her natural gifts, created
an integrated approach to equine balance of body, mind, and spirit. As a certified practitioner of the
Masterson Method™, Tami uses her specialized skills on performance, pleasure,
pasture buddies, and of course rescue horses, creating an individualized
program for each of her clients that is built around their special needs. All
breeds and disciplines can benefit from bodywork, as a natural way to maintain,
or restore range of motion, & balance. The Masterson Method™, combined with
her gift of gentle patience, serve to provide horse owners with a phenomenal,
natural tool, for integrated equine performance. Working throughout Wisconsin
and surrounding states she can be contacted by Ph: 920-253-8151, email: atparr@charter.net. Or view her
website at www.equineatparr.com.

Masterson Method™ Horsey Yoga
Nora Garofalo and Lafitte |
Horses often go into certain Yoga poses in the Masterson Method™
I really like this photo as it shows Nora gently reminding Lafitte to keep his weight balanced on this right side while he relaxes to the left. Great job Nora! Jim

Testimonial:Tamara Yates at UK seminar |
"I have had both acupuncturists and chiropractors work on my horse as she
recovers from a soft tissue injury. The treatment I have found most
effective is the low-impact (Masterson) method that Tamara uses. Tamara is effective because
she gains a horse's trust and then guides the horse, by means of
stretches, flexions, and massage, to 'release' spasmotic muscle clusters
or 'realign' skeletal structures.
Because Tamara uses a series of gentle, normal 'range of motion'
manipulations, the horse benefits immediately and treatment lasts longer
than acute or abrupt methods. Tamara does a great job of delivering
results. In addition to her skill with horses, Tamara is very
professional, engaging, and knowledgeable. She is always a pleasure to
work with."

Ask Jim:
Hello Jim, my horse has recently had a session with the Chiropractor and his left pelvis was raised and his right pelvis was dipped and, therefore, he has some aching muscles. I need some advice on massaging techniques as well as stretching techniques. Thanks so much, Janine
Hi Janine, Regarding your horse's pelvic tilt; if you do the hind end techniques as done on the DVD, it will help to keep tension from accumulating in the muscles associated with your horse's pelvic imbalance. However, it is also important that you use the exercises to keep the poll, atlas and the neck/shoulder/withers junction loose as well, as tension that accumulates there will affect the sacrum, pelvis and hind end, and vice-versa.
Getting the pelvis "straight" isn't always easily accomplished, especially in a horse that is a bit older. But, if you can keep tension from accumulating in the area, then the horse can still perform well.
A tilted pelvis isn't necessarily a terrible thing. I have many clients whose horses are not "even" in the pelvis and have been performing at very high levels this way for years. Your horse's aching muscles in this area could be the result of various things - normal soreness from the work the horse is doing, or abnormal soreness from compensation for sore hocks, stifles or other parts of the hind limbs.
Go back and review the DVD for the exercises on the Poll area, and also review the hind end exercises. I have some Training Videos on the website you can take a look at that might be helpful. Good luck and let me know how he is doing. Jim

Needing Help:
I am a doctoral candidate with the University of Mississippi. My dissertation project is focused on the personality structure of horses. Currently I am seeking out those in the equine industry to help me with my online survey.
I need at least 1,000 people to take the 20-minute survey by the end of July. I am hoping that you would be interested in helping. Click here for specifics
Thank you for taking the time to consider this. Rachel Kristiansen, M.A. University of Southern Mississippi Department of Psychology |

Success with the DVD
Dear Jim: I have
started the process of
getting my horse used to
massage. I began just as in the video and continued each
body part as suggested. I am working on doing it without a halter. I move the process
slowly so he feels that I am doing it for him not to him. Today he
allowed me to bring his head down and massage his poll for the 2nd
time.
This time his eyes softened. I continued for a few minutes
then
stepped back and he shook his head just like in the video. I
have used the beginning massage each time and today while riding he was
like butter, even offering to stretch his top line in a lovely
buttery
canter. I know this helps him to be loose from front to back already. I
can't
wait to progress to see how this helps him move. Thanks for your DVD. Linda Hi Linda, I'm glad it's working for you. It sounds
like you're doing it exactly as it's supposed to be done.. Slow and
steady wins the race. Less is more. Throw away the clock... and all the
other applicable cliche's! Seriously, keep up the good work.
I hope you can make it to one of our
Workshops sometime. Jim To
