When we first created the Masterson Method™
Certification program we wanted to put together a program that, like the Method
itself, was practical and would get results - both for the horse and for
the practitioner's business.
We want to continue to find ways that we can support our Masterson Method
Certified Practitioners in their businesses, but we are also eager to do what
we can to help everyone connected with the Masterson Method through these
economic times. Sharing ideas and resources with you that have worked for us is
one way to help. A couple resources that have impacted our business: Mark Cohen and Cindee Van Dijk have been a great help to us in
keeping our business growing. Mark's experience with major corporations has
helped our small business develop an internet marketing plan that we would not
otherwise have been able to do. This, along with Cindee Van Dijk's technical web programing skills and reasonable rates have allowed
us to present our cyber-selves to the world in a professional way. They have
made themselves available to those in our growing Masterson Method family. (read article below)
Another way to help those in our group working with horses is
to create new resources. The Discussion Forum and Masterson Method Certified Practitioners Directory on our website can be useful tools for developing your
business. Another creative suggestion is to start exchanging notable
successes on the Forum from our Certified Practitioners as well as success stories of those
who have used the Masterson Method DVD, and those who have taken Weekend Seminar Workshops and
3-Day Advanced Courses. We want to encourage all of you to use these
resources, and also encourage you to help us come up with other ideas along the
way.
Meanwhile, it's a busy month in Florida. Last week was the
first qualifier for the World Equestrian Games US Jumping Team in Wellington.
This week I'll be working with Bill Stanton on horses competing on teams from
the US, Mexico and Ireland in the FEI Nations Cup. I won't be able to watch the
event itself as I'll be in Ocala for the FEI Endurance Ride starting
Thursday. I guess you can't have it all.
Hope you're all doing well. In the meantime, like myself,
enjoy your horses.
Jim
PS. We are slowly re-building our website. We hope by the time you get this, we will be up to speed. If you notice a glitch in functionality, let us know.

Two People That Helped Us and Can Help You Boost Your Business
Mark Cohen:
Mark is a traditionally trained marketer and is principal of Colloquy Digital which he founded in 2009. He started his career in the mail room in the ad business and in 1994 founded one of the first interactive ad agencies in New York. He led Janus Funds into the Internet age, then formed one of the largest interactive marketing agencies in Denver. Prior to starting Colloquy, he was VP Marketing for web consulting firm, Human Factors International. A self-proclaimed marketing technologist, Mark loves gadgets almost as much as he does music, animals, the outdoors, sports and spicy food. He graduated from the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce's Leadership Denver Program and has spent countless hours volunteering and on not-for-profit boards in Denver and in his new home town of Fairfield, Iowa. Cindy Van Dijk
Have you noticed all the changes to the website? How easy it is to get around, sign up for courses, and browse the calendar? Well, that's because of our web-guru, Cindee Van Dijk's technical expertise. Recently, when our website went down, she helped us recreate the website - which is still in the works, please be patient! Her ability to get a job done quickly and with a smile on her face, has kept morale up in an otherwise stressful experience.
What people have said about the new design: "I wanted to compliment you on my recent sales transaction. I loved the checkout, fast reply for my purchase and email of my paid invoice......My dream is for a web site designer to help us make it that simple and effortless." from recent email, who subsequently has hired Cindee to help with their website design and functionality.
Cindee works closely with a graphic designer. Here is a sample of the work that they have done together: Caring For Pets Online. If you already have a website that needs tweeking, or want to start from scratch, Here is how you can contact Cindee: cindee@lisco.com

Peeling an Onion Named, "Spirit."
Hi everyone! As the
Director of Certification I deal with the Case Studies from all of our
Certification Candidates. Mostly I get to hear everyone's excitement and
enthusiasm when they help a horse that had been in pain, or going incorrectly. This
method is so rewarding.
However, I do hear a lot of frustration when someone can't immediately
"fix" a problem in a horse they have worked on.
To this point, I
want to share the story of my client, "Spirit" (He's in the picture with me). Spirit is owned by a wonderful woman who is a very talented
endurance competitor. She has successfully completed the Tevis Cup six times on
other horses! She recently got Spirit and as she began to ride him, he didn't
feel "right" to her. She found Jec Ballou, Dressage Trainer and successful
author, to ride Spirit and help him find his balance. After riding Spirit for
awhile, Jec got me involved in doing our Bodywork on him. Her main challenge
with the horse was that the right lead was very difficult for him. Every time
Jec would get him to pick up the correct lead to the right, he'd fling his head
to the left and bulge his shoulder to the right. And with her on board, I
certainly knew it wasn't the riding!
As I began to work
on him I found pretty much what I expected. He was restricted in his poll,
particularly on the right side and his left and right shoulders were completely
uneven. His right shoulder and withers were somewhat like cement to try to get
to move. At this point his hind end wasn't showing much involvement. I did a complete head to tail work on
him achieving multiple and extensive releases. Afterwards, his owner was very happy and said he felt like a
completely different horse when she rode him! However, the next time Jec rode
him and asked for the right lead; he still couldn't do a correct bend and stuck
his nose out to the left...frustrating for me!
If you have taken
a class from Jim you will have
heard him use the term, "peeling the onion." When you work on a horse and get
some wonderful releases, you may have just begun to peel the onion that is
layer upon layer of old restrictions.
Like an onion, when you "peel" one layer off, in the bodywork, you may
find more layers underneath!
I have worked on
Spirit once a month for about six months, at one point I even brought Jim himself
up to work on him. Well, while
Spirit felt better every time and we noticed improvement, he still wouldn't go
correctly to the right. I kept working on him, bringing him more and more
releases and after peeling many layers, found what I thought was the major restriction causing the
problem... it was a combination of his Atlas/Occiput still being fairly stuck and his shoulder was deeply
restricted, involving the thoracic vertebrae 1-4. Note: I found the spots by using Jim's method
of exploring areas on the horse and watching for the "response" until I hit on
a place that was clearly a major issue.
It took me two works (spread two weeks apart) to release these areas and
FINALLY, I got this feedback from Jec:
"I was able to get some really nice bends to the right and he
finally used his whole body in an organized fashion in that direction. Any
bulging/leaning he did was strictly old mental habits," ... "he was able to get his body aligned
properly and softly and KEEP it that way so long as his mind stayed on task."
FINALLY! To hear this from Jec, whom I have enormous respect
for was very rewarding but the purpose of telling this story is to encourage
everyone to be patient with challenging horses, continue to "peel the onion" on
our equine friends and know that we CAN and WILL help them. I am sure that Spirit will show some
new spot that he needs help with now that we've peeled this layer, but I look
forward to our next work together. Be patient not only with the horses, but
with yourselves... sometimes success comes in small increments, but it does come!

Tip of the Month
from Michele Cartagena, Level I Certification Practitioner: Once I have the shoulder dropped and the foreleg extended, I like to rest my finger on the ting points as the horse relaxes in that position. I find I get better releases from the horse and they seem more focused and willing to stay in that position for a longer period of time. I use the same technique when dropping the hip.
