Windows 7 - Should you upgrade?
Windows 7 has been in public release for about 2 months now and it has become very clear that the upgrade process from Win XP or Vista is no walk in the park. The upgrade from XP to Windows 7 requires a complete reload and reinstall of all of your programs and data. There is a product from Laplink that is supposed to ease this process. The upgrade from Vista to Windows 7 is an in place upgrade that is supposed to go smoothly. We, as others, have found that isn't always the case. Is Windows 7 bad? No it isn't, it is just the upgrade path and processes. If you are purchasing a new system and all of your business line applications, network/systems environment and hardware are compatible, then I would probably purchase the system with Windows 7. Windows 7 is much better than Vista but XP is probably still all that you need. XP has already begun its End of Life process and although still available on new systems, Microsoft could stop that at any time.
If you don't have a business need requiring upgrading to Windows 7 at this time then AdviseTech highly recommends that you allow others to be the ones to do the debugging and that you wait for at least 6 months before even thinking about upgrading. We hope that in this period of time that most install/upgrade issues might be identified, resolved or at least work a rounds available. As more people begin installing/upgrading then more problems will be identified and possibly resolved. We would expect Microsoft to fix issues quickly as this is supposed to be the new Flagship O/S product that wasn't supposed to have all of the problems Vista had. For the most part we have found this to be true so far, but it is still too early to tell.
