Meet The Staff

Ryan McDonough

Ryan McDonough

Ryan is our store manager and has been working here since he was 15 years old. He started out working about 10 hours a week to save money for a car.  Now he works full time ... mostly to pay for gas.

He is a native of Chicago but has lived in the Lone Star State for almost 12 years. Ryan is one of 4 McDonough's you may see around the shop. His older sister Ashley fills in shifts and his parents are regulars.

Ryan's interests are like any other 20 year old male; cars, girls, music, girls, water sports, girls, and oh ya... did we say girls? He is contemplating resuming his education at San Jacinto college but is still unclear what he wants to major in. Too bad "Girls" isn't a field of study!

Coffee of the Month January

  Ethiopian Harrar

An excellent heavy-bodied coffee with an exotic, pungent aroma.  Harrar can have a strong dry edge and a winey to fruit-like acidity. This longberry bean envelops the mouth with a splash of spicy cinnamon and blueberry flavors.   The French roast we have chosen for this coffee brings out its chocolaty flavor profile.

Special Price: $11.00/lb $9.90/lb
Greetings!

This is the first edition of the Coffee Oasis Newsletter.  We hope you enjoy it and, more importantly, we hope you find it worth the read.  The idea is to keep you informed about the goings on at you favorite coffeehouse and share a bit about the beverage we so enjoy.

As a special treat, and to encourage you to read to the end, we have a special offer. The first 30 people who come in and mention the subject of the last article in this nwesletter will receive half off any coffee or espresso drink or 25% off on one pound of the whole bean or ground coffee of your choice.

Thanks for being part of the Coffee Oasis family.

Calendar of Events

It seems like there is always something going on at Coffee Oasis.  Performers from all over the area come by every Tuesday evening for Open Mic Night hosted by our own Rose & Ben and on Thursday nights a group of fine Celtic musicians play for their own pleasure and yours. On February 16th, Zach Tate will treat us to an evening of his unique style of Texas Rock.  Stop by for coffee and dessert and stay for the music. You can purchase Zach's CD, Southern Rain, at the shop any time and have him autograph it at the show.

For more information about activities check out the calendar here.

Keeping it Fresh

We are often asked how best to store whole bean or freshly ground coffee.  The short answer is to store roasted coffee as little as possible.  The coffee bean is a remarkable seed.  Before it is roasted, the green bean can be easily kept in bins, barrels, and burlap bags with no climate control for months without any degradation in quality.  Once roasted, however, it begins to lose flavor quickly and should be used as soon as possible. Ground coffee loses flavor even faster because more surface area is exposed to air.

Moisture is the enemy of coffee. Refrigerators tend to be very moist places so it is best to keep your coffee at room temperature. If you must, freezing is ok but be sure it is in an airtight container.  Air is the second enemy as it quite literally sucks the flavor out of the coffee.  That is why we sell coffee in plastic lined bags with tin ties folded to minimize the air in the bag.  It is best to store your coffee in an airtight container at room temperature.

Even better ... come by your favorite coffeehouse often and replenish your home supply frequently!

In the Beginning ...

Edward Lloyd opened his coffeehouse on Tower Street in London sometime in 1688.  As it happened, this particular coffeehouse was frequented by merchants, captains, and ship owners with a problem.  Shipping was a risky business in the 17th century and they needed a way to shift and share that risk so that a wreck would not be ruinous to their fortunes.  Over coffee and conversation they solved their problem and invented a whole new industry.  The fact that so many members of the shipping trade frequented Lloyds made it a reliable source of information and thus made the valuation of risk easier.  They entered into contracts with each other to cover losses in exchange for a fee, sometimes a share of the cargo and sometimes a cash premium. Thus, they invented the business of insurance.  In 1769 the group moved out of the original coffee house into a larger space and they left the coffee business behind yet they continued to be known as Lloyds Coffee House, and eventually Lloyds of London.
Rusty's Corner

It's called Coffee Oasis

The coffee part is obvious ... we serve the finest, freshest coffee we can find in an awe inspiring variety of ways.  Yes, we have other beverages, a menu of interesting breakfast delights, some of the best sandwiches and soups you will find anywhere, and those desserts....

In our hearts we are an old fashioned coffeehouse.  The kind where our founding fathers hashed out the details of the Constitution; where ships captains came together to solve problems of risk; that served as the incubator of talents as varied as Bob Dylan, Allen Ginsberg, and Picasso; and celebrated in songs like Sugar Shack and Black Coffee.  A coffeehouse to go for your morning cup of Jo of or linger over a rich espresso.

The Oasis is less obvious but, to us, equally important.  The dictionary defines an oasis as fertile ground in a desert and a place that gives relief from a troubling or chaotic situation. An oasis is a place where people of all kinds find refuge and refreshment.  It is a place of rest, commerce, to be with friends, to meet new people, to relax, or to engage in discussion.  An oasis can be something different to each of the many people it shelters but those people, each with different motives, form a community.

So much of the modern world has us segregated and busy with our separate lives. At Coffee Oasis we invite you to come and enjoy a cup of coffee or whatever you would like ... make new friends or catch up with old ones ... reconnect with your email or favorite website, read or just hang out ... be yourself in a community of others being themselves.  Let us get to know you and make yourself at home.

We hope you enjoy this newsletter almost as much as you enjoy your favorite treat at Coffee Oasis.  Let us know what you think.  Feel encouraged to tell us of any topics or features you would like to see in future issues.

See you soon at the Oasis.

Sincerely,
Rusty Cates
