Greetings!

The construction industry, once a sector known for steady work and decent pay, has been marching to a different beat for the last few years. The availability and consistency of construction jobs was one of the drivers that fueled the Valley's workforce, generating a population surge which in turn created a demand for more office space, hospital expansions and residential housing. Not surprisingly, the construction industry, after suffering a dramatic decline during the seemingly lingering recession, has been one of the slowest sectors to turn a corner towards growth and recovery.

On a positive note, there are certainly companies that are expanding and building new distribution warehouses, healthcare facilities and educational facilities in the Central Valley, helping to show a sign of confidence in the market. According to the Associated General Contractors of America, building for energy, health care, education and other growing sectors has remained strong both locally and around the country, but commercial, residential and public-sector development are still recovering at a tortoise's pace.

While most construction companies are working hard to stay afloat and stand out during these times of uncertainty, some firms are realizing that specialized experience and finding a niche market is key. These days, there are a multitude of firms putting in bids for projects in sectors with which they lack total experience. We call this the shot-gun approach - take a big shot and hope you hit something. We prefer a more targeted approach. For example, we're experts in healthcare and OSHPD compliance, so we're very specific in our target market of medical facilities. After years of being in this business, I know that one key to a company's success is specialization, and an important factor is honing in out what your company does best and doing it even better.

Sincerely,

A Review of Change the Culture, Change the Game

Among the plethora of tactics, practices and strategies that make a business successful, lie two of the most important - employees' accountability and the ability to create a positive corporate culture. What may not be obvious is that these must both be implemented simultaneously for success, because according to authors of 2011, Roger Connors and Tom Smith, they go hand-in-hand. "When you base culture change on accountability and adopt a process designed to produce your desired results, you not only create a competitive advantage, you gain the tools you need to sustain that advantage far into the future." Connors and Smith go on to outline the components of their Results Pyramid - experiences, beliefs and actions - which when working in harmony will not only energize an organization but lead it down the path of success.
