Greetings!
Fresno County sits just shy of one million people; Visalia recently has been referred to as one of the fastest growing cities in California; Clovis is building schools at an unprecedented rate to keep up with development, despite the 6-year downturn in the economy; over the course of the next twenty to twenty-five years we'll watch the high-speed rail lay tracks from San Diego to San Francisco, with the Central Valley acting as the bridge between northern and southern California....it's no secret this state is growing and that the Valley is experiencing the bulk of that growth.
With a surge in population comes an obvious interest in large corporations to penetrate the market - and while we welcome economic growth and corporate stability with open-arms, I feel it is also necessary to acknowledge the small businesses, family farming operations and the moms-&-pops that are all the economic backbone of this great Valley. Small businesses still personify business in its purest form - if clients aren't satisfied with the product or service being offered, the business will have to close its doors. There are no government subsidies, there are no accounting tricks to hide losses, there is no seed money for lobbyists or garnering tax credit legislation. It is relentless hard work and dedication that build successful businesses that can transcend generations.
My hats off to both the small businesses and large corporations that will call the Central Valley home this year - 2011 is a new year with the chance for thriving national and international corporations to work alongside multi-generational companies, and the opportunities that will arise among the two are endless!
Happy New Year and may it be the best one yet!
Sincerely,
Matt Seals

How the Best Leaders Lead Proves Problem-Solving Skills are Key to Success
Among the plethora of tactics, practices and strategies that make a business successful, lies the most important - one's approach to problem solving. Success as a leader, and an individual, is determined by your ability to solve problems effectively and efficiently. Every day, in every situation, you are presented with problems - problems that need to be solved quickly and with adequate contemplation. As Brain Tracy, author of How the Best Leaders Lead and renowned business speaker and consultant, points out, successful leaders "don't react to problems with anger or frustration; they look upon problems as the essential defining skill area of their work." Being solution based and having good problem solving skills are key. In this challenging economic time, the race is on between businesses, and if you are not committed to running a lean, efficient company, prepared to handle every type of situation, you will be passed up. Tracy goes on in his book to identify that "great leaders determine their ideal leadership style for any situation, identify opportunities and take concrete action."
