Greetings!

Times are tough right now and unfortunately, it encourages some organizations to cut corners, turn a blind eye and ignore the consequences of unethical business practices. The temptation of making even a minor immoral business move to ensure financial gain for the company seems to take precedent over doing the right thing. But as the age-old saying goes, "it's never the right time to do the wrong thing." Regardless of how difficult times are and how frustrating the economic situation is, it isn't worth taking that kind of risk.
The public relations implications, and potential legal consequences, far outweigh the short-term financial benefits a company might be seeking.

By establishing a core set of values for your company, you empower all employees in the organization to make the right decision in every business situation they're involved in. Relying on your "gut" reaction is usually a safe bet, but a written set of values statements reinforce the importance of good, legitimate business practice.

Ethics and values should always remain at the helm of your business strategy, guiding the decisions you make on a daily basis and on a larger, long-term scale. We are already starting to see the economy make a turn, but keep in mind that the moral compass needs to stay on track! Your company's reputation and future depend on it.

Sincerely,

Seals/Biehle Awarded $2 Million Construction Contract for Transit Maintenance Facility

At its May 3 regular meeting, the Visalia City Council authorized the Transit Division to award the construction contract for the Transit Operations & Maintenance Facility expansion in the amount of $2,070,000 to Seals/Biehle General Contractors of Visalia. The City will use $1.1 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) grant funds that were left over from the Transit Center expansion project toward the Operations Facility. The remaining funds will come from the Local Transportation Fund initially and be replaced by Prop 1B funds that the Transit Division is programmed to receive as the State is able to sell bonds. Both the LTF and Prop 1B funds are not scheduled to be used for any other purpose until the Prop 1B funds are received, at which time the LTF funds can be redirected to other capital or operating expenditures.

Divide or Conquer - the route to take when organizational conflict arises

In Divide or Conquer, Diana McLain Smith details the steps companies and individuals must take when conflict arises amongst colleagues in order to avoid organizational turmoil. Smith centers her thoughts on the idea that "relationships may be the single most underutilized lever for transforming the performance of teams and organizations."

Take for instance, the demise between Steve Jobs and John Sculley at Apple - their differences of opinion and constant disagreements drove a seemingly good partnership into the ground and put Apple at risk of a takeover. The reality is that conflict is inevitable - people are set in their ways, their thoughts, their strategies - but great teams and organizations are not caught off-guard by it, but rather anticipate it and have the appropriate steps outlined which they will take when it arises. Preparation for such predicaments is important; you cannot control how someone will react to a situation but you can control how you approach it and treat it. Knowing the parameters of a relationship and what challenges that relationship can handle are extremely important factors when dealing with a conflict.

Ultimately, an organization pays the price for a failed relationship, so sustaining good relationships amongst employees and communicating effectively with colleagues is essential to the success of a business.
