Greetings!
While some think New Year's resolutions are cliché, there is something to be said for starting fresh, being pro-active and committing to something you've managed to bury all year long. The one recurring road block? Procrastination. It's like always saying you want to drop a few pounds so you'll start dieting...on Monday. And when Monday comes and goes, the following Monday looks more probable. This vicious cycle of not meeting the end goal because you could never jump start the process is haunting. Like any successful business owners, athletes, teachers or musicians, it's important to make a plan, set goals and then develop a process that will help you attain those goals. A writer drafts an outline before penning a story, and similarly, as business owners we need to organize our work, set the objective and develop explicit direction before engaging in a new project. It's healthy, and necessary, to look back on the year, reflect on what was successful and what can be chalked up to a learning experience, and move forward, focusing on new objectives that will help improve business. Whether it's seeking new business opportunities, trimming the fat of your current operation, or diversifying your client base, I challenge you make a New Year's resolution that you'll stick with - personally or professionally. So jump in, with both feet, and don't wait until "Monday." Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your family!
Sincerely, Matt Seals |

Employers Asked to Implement Updated FMLA Policies and Procedures
Just over a month ago, the provisions of the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) were expanded by President Obama with the 2010 Natioanl Defense Authorization Act, urging employers (with 50 or more employees) to act immediately to implement the new standard procedures.
In an article posted by The Associate General Contractors of America, "with many service members returning home with conditions like Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), these amendments allow additional time for diagnosing a condition such as PTSD, for which a service member may not display symptoms and be diagnosed until after he or she becomes a veteran. Now, family members will be eligible for FMLA to care for these men and women." (Click here to read the complete article posted by AGC) |
2010 Compliance for CARB Off-Road Diesel Regulations
In late July 2009, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) announced that large fleets of off-road diesel vehicles, those with over 5,000 horsepower, must be in compliance with the 2010 regulation performance requirements. The new requirements for medium and small fleets will begin in 2013 and 2015, respectively. For companies seeking to obtain early credits under the in-use off-road diesel vehicle regulation, the Air Resources Board has approved two new ways - one for fleets that have reduced horsepower from 2006 to 2010, and another for fleets that have reduced overall activity. To avoid fines for non-compliance, employers are encouraged to meet the requirements within the specified window of time.
