World Premiere of the "Devil's Trill" Arranged Especially for Vivaldi Virtuosi By Gerald Elias
The 29th Vivaldi By Candlelight concert on December 10 will include-in the literal sense of the word- some of the most truly fantastic music ever composed.
The "Devil's Trill" Sonata was composed by Giuseppe Tartini immediately after experiencing a vision of the devil sitting at the foot of his bed. The devil, demanding Tartini's violin, then played the most astounding music he ever heard. The next morning Tartini endeavored to duplicate the hellish virtuosity he had witnessed, and the end result is this, his greatest masterpiece. I've arranged the sonata especially for the Vivaldi Virtuosi for this concert, and I guarantee you'll feel the hair standing on the back of your neck (if you have hair) when you hear the violins play that eerie, diabolical trill in the final movement!

WACA Call to Action
At the 2011 Annual Membership Meeting, the WACA national network endorsed a Call to Action Statement: Educating the Next Generation of Global Citizens. Show your support, sign the petition! The Call to Action Statement stresses the urgency of preparing the next generation of American decision-makers and opinion leaders to thrive in tomorrow's world and the commitment of the network to address this issue.
Preparing the next generation of American decision-makers and opinion leaders to thrive in tomorrow's world, where our national interests and policies are deeply intertwined with those of the greater global community, requires that we close the gap in students' knowledge about global affairs and restore American excellence in science and math. Research is showing troubling signs. American students are performing well below students in other developed nations in science and math and American students are also lacking in basic knowledge of world history, international geography and global issues.
While it is essential for students to possess a greater knowledge of world history, geography, science, math, cultures and political systems, this alone is not enough. They must also be able to make the connections between national issues and broader global themes. Our education programs must help students build essential skills such as critical thinking, leadership, the ability to understand and recognize other perspectives and an interdisciplinary approach to problem solving. Finally, they must also develop the motivation for life-long learning about our globalizing world. Failure to address these needs will result in negative consequences for America's national security and economic well-being and will lead to a citizenry ill equipped to take their place as leaders in the international workplace and as problem-solvers on the international stage. Our nation's future depends on a more globally minded and prepared youth.

After a period of working in the Italian Neorealist style, Fellini became interested in the work of Carl Jung and began keeping notebooks of his dreams, complete with illustrations; these notebooks became the inspiration for his later films. Filled with dream like sequences, bizarre, yet archetypal characters, and baroque touches, these films came to define the term "Felliniesque' to film goers. Join The City Library on Saturday, December 10, for three films of the master. The Fellini Film Festival is intended for mature audiences. More info: http://www.slcpl.lib.ut.us/ |
