Islam in the U.S.: A Pakistani Perspective

By Emily Gillespie, Sophomore, Brigham Young University

Emily Gillespie (left) with Visitors from Pakistan examining "Islam in the U.S.

"Last month, I had the wonderful opportunity to accompany guests of the U.S. Department of State's International Visitor Leadership Program from Pakistan examining "Islam in the U.S." to their professional appointments and cultural activities. The program was administered locally by the Utah Council for Citizen Diplomacy. When we first met, there was a bit of uncertainty because of our cultural differences, which is something to be expected when meeting new people for the first time. However, as the day progressed, we started sharing stories and discussed everything from history to pop culture.

For many of them, their favorite part of the program was meeting with members of the Salt Lake Interfaith Roundtable, whose original purpose was to fulfill the Olympic Charter requirement to "provide religious support" for athletes and families. The discussion gave them the opportunity to understand how leaders from different faiths could meet and collaborate on mutual interfaith goals. In this context, religious leaders are not trying to promote one religion over another, but rather to increase awareness and dialogue between faiths." Continue reading.

Citizen Diplomacy Praised by U.S. House of Representatives

Seal of the U.S. House of RepresentativesIn recently passed legislation, the U.S. House of Representatives acknowledged and commended the work of the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs and its International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) - UCCD's flagship program. Rep. Allyson Schwartz (D-PA) stated that, "these robust and effective international education, cultural exchange and leadership development programs strengthen our relationships with foreign partners that in turn benefit our economy and our national security." The Amendment goes on to praise the IVLP, explaining that the work of citizen diplomacy "fosters mutual understanding between people of the United States and people of other countries to promote friendly and peaceful relations."
