Ambassadors in the Making

By Jennifer Hefti, UCCD Director of Communications

People to People Student Ambassador Eric Heins

People to People Student Ambassador Eric Heins (middle) with Cynthia Budge (far left),  and Jennifer Hefti (far right)

"Last May, I had the privilege of meeting six emerging leaders, preparing to journey to Australia as People to People Student Ambassadors. People to People, very much like the Utah Council for Citizen Diplomacy's Department of State-sponsored International Visitor Leadership Program, dates back more than half a century ago to President Dwight D. Eisenhower, who sought an alternative to the wars he witnessed by focusing on cultural exchange programs.

The students, primarily from Ogden-area high schools, were nominated by their teachers for their outstanding leadership, academic, and AMBASSADOR qualities. How do you spot an individual with such remarkable qualities? Students who embark on these types of programs are Able, Meaningful, Balanced, Adaptable, Social, Scholarly, Aware, Diplomatic, Opportunity seeking, and Respectful." Continue reading

Those on the Front Lines of Diplomacy

By Steve Clemons, The Huffington Post

Fay LewisFay Lewis [pictures], a longtime Program Officer at Meridian International Center - one of UCCD's eight National Program Agencies based in Washington, DC - passed away last fall. She is remembered in a piece in The Huffington Post that serves also to recognize all those who work behind the scenes to organize international exchanges, such as the Utah Council for Citzien Diplomacy's Department of State-sponsored International Visitor Leadership Program.

"My good friend Fay Lewis died last September, and I've been mulling her passing the last many months. [...] Lewis had become America's super-agent for placing foreign visitors that the Department of State had targeted as prospects for serving as better bridges between their countries and the U.S. Through her demands issued to me from her perch at the Meridian International Center, directing the Center's work with the State Department's International Visitor Leadership Program, I met somewhere around 1,000 people since she first put me to work for her."
