The IVLP: Offering International Visitors the Chance to See the Real America

Sherry L. MuellerSherry L. Mueller, Ph.D., President of the National Council for International Visitors in Washington, D.C. - UCCD is a proud member of NCIV - recently published an article in response to a BBC New Magazine essay, describing the 70-year history of the U.S. Department of State's International Visitor Leadership Program. Although the article offered flattering criticism, she takes issue with the author's claim that the IVLP is "little more than propaganda" and "expensive."

By contrast, she offers that "Participants of the program, whether they are destined to be political stars in their countries or leaders in other fields, have the opportunity to assess the United States on their own terms." She continues, "The U.S. citizens they meet - most volunteer citizen diplomats - give them a face to put on this immense and diverse country. This, in turn, allows them to come to their own nuanced conclusions about what the United States is really like." To read the full article, click here
Spotlight on Emerging Citizen Diplomats

NCIV Citizen Diplomacy Program for Emerging Leaders As part of the National Council for International Visitors' 50th Anniversary commemoration, NCIV selected twelve emerging Citizen Diplomats to participate in the National Meeting in February 2011. The program had a dual purpose: to help educate U.S. students about global affairs and help prepare future leaders within the network of Councils for International Visitors - UCCD is a CIV. The twelve participants collected video footage during the National Meeting and produced a short report of their experience. To view the video, click here
