U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs Ann Stock addressed the 2011 Annual Meeting of the National Council for International Visitors (NCIV) on February 17, 2011. In her remarks, she stressed two major milestones: the 50th Anniversary of NCIV and the 70th Anniversary of the U.S. Department of State's International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP). "When you meet with Americans, you meet American values." said Stock. "You are the people who make things happen and who make citizen engagement a key part of our bilateral and multilateral relationships. As part of the National Council for International Visitors' (NCIV) 50th Anniversary commemoration, we asked you to submit your experiences welcoming International Visitors to your homes and in the workplace to be considered for publication in One Handshake at a Time: NCIV's Half Century of Leadership in Citizen Diplomacy. The purpose of this 50th Anniversary volume is to document success stories throughout the NCIV network, to capture "the most human of motivations of the people who made them possible."

SLC Public Library Guest Writer Series: Michael Ondaatje Tuesday, March 29, 2011, 7:00 p.m., SLC Main Library Auditorium Michael Ondaatje is the author of the Booker Prize-winning novel, The English Patient, which was adapted into an Academy Award-winning film. He is also the author of several volumes of prose and poetry, including The Collected Works of Billy the Kid, Coming Through Slaughter, and Running in the Family.
This reading will be simulcast on KCPW FM 88.3. On Wednesday, March 30,at 3:30 p.m., in Room 109 of the Carolyn Tanner Irish Building at the University of Utah, Ondaatje will give a free public lecture about the current state of fiction. That evening, the public is invited to join Ondaatje at the SLC Main Library Auditorium at 7:00 p.m. to discuss the making of the film The English Patient.
