Greetings!

Abraham Lincoln's Thanksgiving Proclamation issued October 3, 1863, is an eloquent invitation to count one's blessings. It is a reminder to appreciate the accident of birth or acquired citizenship that enables one to call the United States home.

It is also an appropriate time to reflect on how we share this gift with others through citizen diplomacy - the concept that the individual has the right - even the responsibility - to help shape U.S. foreign relations "one handshake at a time."

Here in Utah, the Utah Council for Citizen Diplomacy (UCCD) provides wonderful opportunities to share American values and culture with foreign leaders who participate in the U.S. Department of State's International Visitor Leadership Program.

Help support the vital work and positive impact of the Utah Council for Citizen Diplomacy at the 28th Vivaldi by Candlelight Benefit Concert on Saturday, December 18 at 8:00 p.m. To reserve your seats, please call (801) 832-3270. For program details, please visit our website at www.utahdiplomacy.org. Thank you for your generous contribution.

Happy Thanksgiving!

PE Class at East High School
PE Class at East High School

"As a Communications Intern with the Utah Council for Citizen Diplomacy, I recently had the privilege of escorting four International Visitors from Armenia, Estonia, Iceland and the Netherlands to their professional meetings. The Visitors traveled to Utah as part of the U.S. Department of State's International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) to examine "U.S.-European Cooperation on Global Health Issues."

During their stay, they met with a wide range of professionals, including a PE teacher at East High School [pictured], the CEO of Primary Children's Hospital, and a health writer with the Salt Lake Tribune. The goal of these meetings was to give the Visitors an opportunity to exchange information on key health issues that affect human populations all over the world." Continue reading.

"I recently had the privilege to meet and talk with a roomful of dedicated citizen diplomats. When I say a roomful, I am talking about over 400 people who have gathered this week in Washington, D.C., for the U.S. Summit & Initiative for Global Citizen Diplomacy

During the opening plenary, Under Secretary for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs Judith A. McHale [pictured] welcomed summit participants and encouraged them to continue their ongoing efforts as citizen diplomats.

"We must engage with people at all levels, in all sectors of society. And, as President Obama has stated, we must engage with them on the basis of mutual respect and mutual understanding; an engagement which fosters a spirit of collective action to address our common problems," Under Secretary McHale stated."
