2010-2011 World Affairs Lecture Series

Daniel Griswold
The Utah Council for Citizen Diplomacy (UCCD) is pleased to announce the 2010/2011 Ambassador John Price and Marcia Price World Affairs Lecture Series, in partnership with Westminster College's Weldon J. Taylor Executive Lecture Series and American Express.

Tuesday, September 14, 2010, 7:00 PM
Mad About Trade:
Why Main Street America Should Embrace Globalization
Daniel Griswold, Director, Center for Trade Policy Studies,
Cato Institute

Not since colonial days have Americans earned or spent a higher share of their income in the global economy than they do now. In our current economic downturn, terms like "free trade" and "globalization" are often derided by politicians and commentators as a threat to middle-class "Main Street" Americans. Daniel Griswold makes a persuasive case against US protectionism and presents a clear view of America's changing place in the world economy, illustrating how low-income and middle-class Americans are the most likely to benefit from the global marketplace in the form of lower prices, greater variety, and better quality of goods. For details and a complete list of speakers, please visit our website.

All lectures are free and open to the public, and held in the Vieve Gore Concert Hall at Westminster College.

On Thursday, August 12, 2010, the Utah Council for Citizen Diplomacy (UCCD) paid tribute to remarkable Utah leaders who help shape U.S. foreign relations "one handshake at a time," and presented Ambassador John Price and Marcia Price, and Rosemary Baron, with the 2010 Citizen Diplomat Award. The award is presented annually to individuals who have made a significant contribution to Citizen Diplomacy in the state of Utah. The award was presented at the 2010 Tribute to Utah's Citizen Diplomats held at the Jewett Center for the Performing Arts at Westminster College.

"The freedoms we hold are so precious and so dear, and worth working for and talking about and representing," Marcia Price said in her remarks." [John's ambassadorship] was indeed an honor and a pleasure, as it is to receive this award."

Speaking Thursday, lifelong educator Rosemary Baron recounted how she became involved with UCCD in 1998, when she hosted a group of educators from Saudi Arabia at Northwest Middle School traveling to Utah as guests of the U.S. Department of State's International Visitor Leadership Program, administered locally by UCCD. Students became "ambassadors" as they toured the facilities and described their curricular activities. Teachers shared best practices in curriculum development.  In turn, the guests described their countries and cultures. "This became the perfect model of reciprocal learning" said Baron.

The Deseret News covered the award ceremony. Please click here to read Jamshid Ghazi Askar's article, "Citizen Diplomat Awards Presented at Westminster Ceremony."

Host A German Exchange Student

Experiment in International Living The Experiment in International Living, the oldest non-profit student exchange organization, is in need of 10 host families here in Utah. A U.S. partner of the German based Experiment e.V. has fallen through with their commitment to placing those students.

We need your help! Volunteer to host a German high school exchange student for one school year starting at the end of August. Single individuals do qualify as "family", granting that they will spend time with the student helping him/her to assimilate to Utah and U.S. culture. "Non-traditional" families also qualify as long as the student accepts such placement.

As a non-profit, volunteer organization, Experiment cannot pay host families, but a stipend to help with the financial burden of hosting and feeding another family member can be provided.

For more information or to volunteer, please contact Christoph Dressler, Assitant Director of the International Student Recruitment and Sponsored Student Programs at the University of Utah, at c.dressler@ic.utah.edu or (801) 718-4121.
