Afghan Provincial Leaders Learn From Utah Democratic System

Voting is the essence of democracy - it symbolizes the freedom to choose our elected officials. In July, a group of International Visitors from Afghanistan traveled to Utah as guests of the U.S. Department of State's International Visitor Leadership Program, administered locally by the Utah Council for Citizen Diplomacy, to get a closer look at the U.S. democratic system.

As part of their professional program, the Visitors met with Salt Lake County Clerk Sherrie Swensen and were interviewed by Ben Winslow of Fox 13 Now Utah. Click here to view video.

Conflict Resolution Group
"In July, the Utah Council for Citizen Diplomacy (UCCD) had the privilege of hosting 6 International Visitors, traveling to Utah as guests of the U.S. Department of State's International Leadership Program, to examine Conflict Resolution

Participants came from Burma, East Timor, Nigeria, Philippines, Romania, and Sudan. Many of these Visitors came from countries and regions that have experienced years, or even decades, of unrest caused by political, cultural, and religious differences. Their program in Utah focused on one aspect of conflict resolution: Refugee Resettlement and Community Building. Their local professional program included meetings with representatives of KUED - Channel 7, Utah Federation for Youth, Inclusion Center for Community and Justice, the Salt Lake Interfaith Roundtable, and the Somali Bantu Community & Interpretation Services.  Additionally, the Visitors participated in a panel discussion on Refugee Resettlement, Integration, and Employment, which included speakers from The Canyons Resort, Catholic Community Services' Immigration and Refugee Resettlement Program, the Utah Refugee Services Office, and the International Rescue Committee of Salt Lake City. During their stay, the Visitors also had an opportunity to interact with American children at the Boys & Girls Clubs of South Valley and to participate in an evening of Home Hospitality."
