International Visitor Snapshot: South Korea
International Visitors from South Korea with Emily Gillespie | July
8, 2010. Salt Lake City, Utah. "I had the opportunity to shadow
Visitors from South Korea for a day, participating in the U.S.
Department of State's International Visitor Leadership Program,
administered locally by the Utah Council for Citizen Diplomacy. The
Visitors traveled to Utah to examine "U.S. Trade and Economy." At
first, I thought the language barrier would hinder communication. But
with the help of the U.S. Department of State Interpreter, we were
able to discus Utah's unique landscape, as well as its current
economic situation.
Along
with the Visitors, I observed meetings at the Utah Science Technology
and Research (USTAR) initiative, and the Utah U.S. Export
Assistance Center. The International Visitors learned different
techniques to stimulate the economy and talked about the importance
of laboratory research. Much of the discussion focused on foreign
markets and international trade, and the Visitors became more aware
of how small businesses can compete globally. They also discussed how
they could implement these best practices in their own companies back home." Continue reading.
Emily
Gillespie is a graduate of Lone Peak High School. She will be
entering Brigham Young University in the Fall of 2010 to study
International Relations and Economics.

Saudi Arabia Teams Up with Utah
International Visitors from Saudi Arabia with Westminster College President, Michael Bassis | July 8, 2010. Salt Lake City, Utah. Saudi
Arabia has long been a powerful player in the global community
because of its stature in the oil industry. According to the U.S.
Department of State (Source), this dynamic country has also been increasing
its involvement with the United States, and making waves in areas,
such as health care, civic engagement, and international trade. This
past year, over 125 Saudis traveled to the U.S. on various U.S.
Department of State-sponsored exchange programs, including high
school exchange students, and over 80 emerging leaders through the
International Visitor Leadership Program. Of those 80
International Visitors, the Utah Council for Citizen Diplomacy welcomed 21 in 2009. Continue reading.
