The World Cup and Africa
With Jonathan Ledgrad, East Africa Correspondent, The Economist

The 2010 World Cup is the first major international sporting event ever hosted by an African country. It is estimated that 373, 000 visitors will have traveled to South Africa for the month-long event and millions more are already tuning in around the world to watch the televised matches. Will the World Cup establish South Africa as the region's economic and political leader? Will it shed light on humanitarian issues in Africa? What will be the lasting economic impact of the World Cup on the region? Jonathan Ledgrad, East Africa Correspondent with The Economist magazine, will answer these, and many more, questions. For more information and to register, please visit our website.

Global IQ with The Economist is a program created by the World Affairs Council of Dallas Fort/Worth (WACDFW), sponsored by Texas Capital Bank and Club Corp, in association with The Economist, and in cooperation with the World Affairs Councils of America (WACA).
Remarks by Alma Candelaria, Director, International Visitor Leadership Program

Alma CandelariaJune 3, 2010. Ms. Alma R. Candelaria, Director of the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP), sponsored by the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, and administered locally by the Utah Council for Citizen Diplomacy, recently shared remarks at the 2010 National Council for International Visitors (NCIV) Southern Regional Meeting in Miami, Florida.

Her speech reflects on the current and past accomplishments of the IVLP, highlighting the impact that the program has on the participants, and looking ahead to key foreign policy themes the Administration, along with her Staff will be addressing in 2011.

"In the first six months of this fiscal year, we've hosted visitors from 167 countries: these include our close neighbors Mexico and Canada as well as countries from Australia to Afghanistan; from Burkina Faso to Ukraine and most countries in between. [...]

The results of the International Visitor Leadership Program often exceed our highest expectations.  Often catalytic, our programs start the ball rolling! Whether by content, context or contacts, the IVLP makes things happen! [...]

Sheikh Boureima Abdou Daouda, one of the most respected and influential Islamic leaders in Niger, recently shared his positive experiences with the "Religious Freedom and Interfaith Dialogue" program. During a lecture on March 28, 2010 at the University of Niamey, Sheikh Boureima gave a speech he called, "Lessons Learned from My Trip to the United States." He told the audience that the United States he saw was in stark contrast to the image many people have and he thanked the United States government for the opportunity to see this for himself and for the occasion to guide others toward a more accurate understanding."
