- Seven International Visitors from Saudi Arabia visited Utah under the auspices of the U.S. Department of State's International Visitor Leadership Program, administered locally by the Utah Council for Citizen Diplomacy, to examine "Religious and Public Education." The International Visitors met with Senator Gene Davis to discuss religion in Utah and its intersection with public education in influencing education policy. Continue reading.
Meet UCCD's Summer Interns

UCCD is pleased to welcome three students to serve as Interns in the International Visitor Leadership Program, and act as ambassadors for the organization on campus and in the community.
 

Amy-Kate AndrewsAmy-Kate Andrews, Communications Intern, is finishing a B.A. in Political Science at the University of Utah. Born in Alaska, Amy-Kate has lived in Washington D.C., San Francisco, Seattle, and France. As a UCCD Intern, she hopes to contribute her interpersonal communication and writing skills to promote the organization while learning more about public relations in an international context. Ashley DabbAshley Dabb, Program Associate Intern, is a graduate student at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University. She is working on an International Affairs degree with emphases on humanitarian assistance and urban planning. After graduating from the University of Washington, Ashley worked at the Department of State foreign language support for the International Visitor Program and co-founded SHe. Alexx GoellerAlexx Goeller, Program Associate Intern, is finishing a B.A. in International Business and French at Westminster College. She enjoys traveling, and has studied abroad in various parts of Europe and Tanzania, Africa. Ten IVLP and FORTUNE/U.S. State Department Global Women's Mentorship Partnership (FORTUNE) alumnae had the opportunity to participate in a roundtable discussion with U.S. Ambassadors Melanne Verveer and Margaret Scobey on April 22, 2010 in Cairo, Egypt.The alumnae discussed the impact of their exchange experiences on their lives and the social, economic, and political barriers they face as women in Egypt.
 
Mahinda RajapaksaIn January's presidential elections, IVLP alumnus  was re-elected as president of Sri Lanka, Mahinda Rajapaksa (left).
 
Following the general election held in the United Kingdom on May 6, 2010, the Conservative Party and Liberal Democrat Party formed a coalition government on May 12, 2010, to which twelve IVLP alumni were appointed as cabinet level ministers.

India Cultural Center Benefit Concert

This event benefits the India Cultural Center of Utah, and features one of the greatest musicians from India, Aashish Khan. Aashish Kahn will be performing with The Inner Voyage World Consort musician group from Salt Lake City. This fusion of Eastern and Western music will provide a rich voyage into Indian culture.

Gina Bachauer International Piano Competitions
June 17 - July 1, 2010, Rose Wagner Performing Arts Center

The XV Gina Bachauer International Artists Piano Competition, for pianists ages 19-32, will be held June 17 through July 1, 2010, in Salt Lake City, Utah. 35 applicants will be selected to compete in this prestigious event, vying for cash prizes exceeding $80,000 US. The chosen competitors will perform over a two-week period for an international jury of 10 distinguished artists, playing in two rounds of recitals.

Volunteers are welcome to help with the International Jury and breakroom as well as assist in the boutique. Second language skills a bonus.

Families willing to volunteer to host a pianist during the competition would also be greatly appreciated.

All volunteers will be rewarded with tickets to the Bachauer events including the parties, Round 1 and 2 of the competition, and the Finals evenings at Abravanel Hall.
