Distinguished Economist in Residence,
American University, & President, Free Africa Foundation
Why haven't the poorest Africans been able to prosper in the
twenty-first century? Celebrated and world-renowned economist Dr.
George Ayittey thinks the answer is obvious: Africa is poor because it
is not free. Because colonial legacies and globalization present a
myriad of difficulties to the continent today, Dr. Ayittey boldly
proposes a new path for Africa - to modernize indigenous traditions of
free enterprise, free markets, and free trade. Learn more.

lecture is presented as part of the Utah Council for Citizen

UCCD Bids Farewell to Eugene Chapman
"The Utah Council for Citizen Diplomacy (UCCD) bids farewell to a dear friend, tireless leader and citizen
diplomat extraordinaire. Eugene "Gene" Wilson Chapman and his wife, Barbara, welcomed hundreds of
International Visitors to their home here in Salt Lake City. Gene served
as Vice President and guided UCCD through its most challenging time. With
good humor, discipline and a commitment to greatness, Gene's contributions were
instrumental to UCCD's success. It was a pleasure to work with Gene, and
to learn from his wealth of knowledge and experience." Laura Dupuy,
UCCD Executive Director
"Gene
Chapman was a leader in every area of his life. His commitment to UCCD
was unwavering and his presidency and travels with Friendship Force led to
increased membership and enthusiasm. He invited me to join the UCCD board
and it has been a highlight of my life. He can now
rest peacefully knowing he had a well-spent life." Denice Wheeler,
Past UCCD Board Treasurer
"It
is hard for me to summarize someone that meant so much to me. More than
anything else, it is Gene's example of honesty, dedication, compassion, and
spunk that continue to influence me as the man I am, and the man I want to
be. UCCD owes a lot to Gene. Not only for his role in our survival as an
organization, but by being a great ambassador for America." Manoli
Sargetakis, Past UCCD Board Chair
