27th Vivaldi by Candlelight - A Benefit Concert
Salt Lake City, November 12, 2009 - The Utah Council for Citizen Diplomacy presents the 27th Vivaldi by Candlelight - A Benefit Concert on Saturday, December 12, 2009, 8:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 12 C Street. The concert features the Vivaldi Virtuosi conducted by Music Director Gerald Elias [pictured playing the violin]. The program comprises the genius of Vivaldi and other Venetian masters of the Renaissance and Baroque. Elias, Utah Symphony's Associate Concertmaster, will be joined by internationally acclaimed flutists, Sergio Pallottelli and Cesar Vivanco. Pallotelli received his musical education at the Milan Conservatory in Italy, and regularly performs as a soloist and chamber musician throughout the United States, Europe, South America, and Australia. Vivanco is principal flutist of the Orquestra Nacional, and founder and long time director of the Festival Internacional de Flautistas in Lima, Peru. Continue reading.
Vivaldi by Candlelight benefits the Utah Council for Citizen Diplomacy (UCCD), an independent, nonpartisan, nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting global understanding and respect between the people of Utah and other nations. Brazil, one of the last economies to get caught in the global financial downturn, is now one of the first to come out of it. Economic growth has resumed, and inflation is low. Moreover, Brazil is a member of the increasingly influential group of fast-growing developing countries known as BRIC - Brazil, Russia, India and China. This nation has recently been taking a turn on the world stage, lending money to the International Monetary Fund and pressing for reforms of international bodies and institutions, from the G10 to the World Bank.

Internship Opportunities in Citizen Diplomacy
 For any college students or young professionals interested in working with citizen diplomacy, the National Council for Iternational Visitors (NCIV) is now offering an excellent opportunity to gain experience in Washington, D.C. NCIV is now accepting applications for its paid internship beginning in January 2010. Interns assist with a variety of substantive projects supporting the network and NCIV as we begin our 50th Anniversary. Interns can receive academic credit for their work, and - thanks to the generous support of donors such as Ann Valuchek and Larry and Dora Chastang - NCIV is able to offer interns $8.25 per hour; for a full-time, ten week internship, this totals $3,300. Business for Diplomatic Action (BDA) is seeking candidates for its Spring Term Internship, which runs from January to May 2010. International Education Week Website Launch
The Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) has launched its International Education Week (IEW) 2009 website, which includes promotional materials, an interactive quiz, and opportunities to post and view planned events around the world. IEW 2009 will take place November 16-20, 2009. IEW also has a Facebook page and group this year, both of which can be accessed through the IEW website. ECA encourages all individuals and institutions interested in international education and exchange activities, including schools, colleges and universities, embassies, international organizations, businesses, associations, and community organizations to participate in celebrating IEW 2009. |

UVU's annual Global Engagement Week (GEW) is part of the worldwide International Education Week (IEW). GEW is a unique opportunity to 1) promote campus-wide international programs that prepare UVU students to become productive citizens in the global society; 2) foster collaboration and integration among international students, conventional students, faculty, staff, and administrators at UVU on international issues; and 3) encourage cultural awareness among UVU students and community members. The Utah Cultural Celebration Center, for the past six years, has featured a holiday tree exhibit in the Celebration Gallery. The purpose of this exhibit is to bring the community together in the celebration of various holiday traditions not only from different countries but also from different religious backgrounds and various family or community traditions. The tree is used as a symbol of friendship and to display the art and artifacts representing the richness of community traditions.
Trees of Diversity 2009 will have over 50 trees and holiday scenes created by various community and ethnic groups.

As part of the 2009-2010 Bastian Foundation Diversity Lecture Series, Dr. Shakti Butler, Documentary Film Producer & Director, will discuss how she uses documentary film and dialogue groups as vehicles for addressing and working to eliminate racism, sexism, classism and homophobia. Dr. Butler has directed and produced documentaries such as The Way Home, Light in the Shadows, and Mirrors of Privilege: Making Whiteness Visible. Butler also created and implemented a national public dialogue program - Heart-to-Heart Conversations - aimed at facilitating learning and sharing about race and culture while she was the executive director of World Trust Educational Services.
