From the coke wars in Colombia to opium crops in Afghanistan, the international drug trade has wide policy repercussions and extends around the globe. Dr. Carpenter will address topics as diverse as the impact of anti-narcotics efforts on local populations, the links between the drug trade and international terrorism, the impact of drug policies on Americans, and the US anti-drug effort in the multilateral context.

Host International Students for Dinner 
Westminster International Student Hosting (WISH) program
 
UCCD and Westminster College's Diversity & International Center are once again partnering to provide Westminster's international students the opportunity to experience Home Hospitality. Volunteer now! Host exchange students for dinner and conversation, and help them learn about the local community and shape a positive view of the United States.

When?
Saturday, October 10, 6-9 p.m. or
Saturday, November 21, 6-9 p.m.

Benefits for Home Hosts:  
  • Befriend students who are far from home 
  • Learn about other customs and cultures through the eyes of young men and women   
  • Help students shape a positive view of the U.S.
How it works
Select a date. Individual students or groups of up to 4 students will be assigned to you. Once assigned, you will receive information about your guests. On the assigned date, you will pick up your guests at Westminster College's Circle in front of Converse Hall (Admissions) on the east side of campus off of 1300 East and return them to campus at 9 p.m.

UCCD Global Lunch Forum:
Promoting Tolerance Through New Media
 
UCCD Logo
Global Lunch Forums provide UCCD Members the opportunity to meet with International Visitors in an informal lunchtime roundtable discussion. These Forums will offer our members the opportunity to meet with International Visitors to gain insights into a broad range of international issues.  
 
The Forums are held on the first Friday of each month, and are free and open to all. RSVP is not required. Bring your own lunch (bottled water will be provided) and join us for the inaugural roundtable discussion on:

The International Book Group meets once a month on Wednesdays at 7 p.m. at the King's English Bookshop (1511 South 1500 East). The Group reads for pleasure to learn about other countries, customs, and cultures through fiction and non-fiction.

>Matsiko - A Ugandan Children's Choir
Westminster College's Music Department presents a performance by Matsiko, a children's choir from Uganda, on Saturday, September 26, 2009, at 7:30 p.m. in the Vieve Gore Concert Hall in the Emma Eccles Jones Conservatory.

Matsiko Children's Choir is comprised of 25 singers, ages 9 to 16. The children are orphans or at-risk children who are performing in the United States to promote the plight of children in Uganda and to help find more sponsors.

Matsiko Choir is part of International Children's Network (ICN). To learn more about the ICN or to become a sponsor, visit icnchildren.net.  
 
This event is free and open to the public. After the performance, the children will be selling African jewelry and CDs. The event is sponsored by Ten Thousand Villages Utah. For more information, visit westminstercollege.edu.

>Celebration of Cultural Diversity
Saturday, September 26, 12:00 - 7:30pm, Salt Lake Art Center

The 7th Annual Multi-Cultural Festival is hosted and sponsored by Salt Lake American Muslim. This event will be located at the Salt Lake Art Center (20 S. West Temple). Activities include: Childrens activities, Sounds of Silk Exhibit with panel discussion at 1:00pm, Kenshin Taiko Japanese drummer, Sol de Jalisco Mariachi Band, Peruvian Dancers, and more starting at 3:00pm, Animated movie Azur & Asmar at 6:00pm.

>Bastian Foundation Diversity Lecture Series
Creating New Truths by Margarita Alcantara
Saturday, September 28, 2009, 7:30 p.m., Westminster College   
 
Alcantara refers to herself as a loud and proud "Queer Filipina Mestiza." Not one to wait for others to take the lead, Alcantara founded the ezine Bamboo Girl as a tool for exploring her identity as a mixed-blood Filipina. The Bamboo Girl manifesto - "Challenging racism, sexism, & homophobia from the Filipina/Asian Pacific Islander (API)/Asian mutt feminist point of view since 1995" - reveals her focus on community activism as well as intersections of identity, including mixed-race identity. In addition to her work in alternative media and as a video maker and performance artist, Alcantara has co-founded Kilawin Kolektibo, a NYC Filipina LBT Networking and support group, and the Campaign for Safer Subway Stations.

>Utah Multi-Cultural Business Expo 2009
November 17-18, 2009, Salt Lake Palace Convention Center
 
The first ever Utah Multi-Cultural Business Expo (UMCBE) is designed to to showcase existing businesses, to build working relationships between businesses, and to put existing businesses in the presence of potential customers such as contracting officers, buyers, or procurement agents. Activities will include tradeshow, networking social, workshops, entertainment, and recognition luncheon.
