"Citizen Diplomacy is an essential piece as we put effort toward becoming a closer world."
- Justin Lafeen,
Global IT Business Analyst, Oracle Corporation

Salt Lake City, June 24, 2009 - The table was set and dinner was cooking as I left our house en route to Little America Hotel to pickup our international visitors from North Africa and the Near East here to examine "Non-governmental organization (NGO) Management." This would be our first experience hosting for the UCCD and we were a bit nervous! I entered the lobby and noticed a small group congregated by the fireplace - Here we go, I thought to myself. Once the customary introductions were exchanged we entered my four-door Sedan and were off to my home in Midvale. Continue reading.

"
Learning a second language is no longer something people do for pleasure or travel. It's a must for those hoping to compete in the global marketplace."
- Sen. Howard Stephenson, R-Draper

Salt Lake City, June 15, 2009 - Gov. Jon Huntsman's appointment as ambassador to China isn't Utah's only Far East bragging right. We have the nation's highest percentage of public-school students studying Mandarin, mostly at the high-school level. And now Mandarin is trickling into elementary schools, securing Utah's leadership role and signaling a renewed focus on bilingual education, say state education officials. "Dual immersion" programs in Mandarin, French and Spanish are coming to 21 elementary schools next year. As the name implies, students at those schools will spend half of every school day immersed in a world language, learning math, science and social studies. Reading and language arts are taught in English. Continue reading.
Public Diplomacy: A National Security Imperative

"
The more languages and venues we communicate in, the more respect we show for our audience, the more effective we will be."
- Judith A. McHale,
Under Secretary for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs

U.S. Department of State
Washington, D.C., June 11, 2009 - In an address at the Center for a New American Security, newly appointed Under Secretary for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs at the U.S. Department of State, Judith A. McHale, reiterated the administration's commitment to "renewing our engagement with the people of the world and restoring the kind of leadership that made the United States a force for global progress for so much of our history." She also shared her thoughts on what effective engagement looks like and why it is so important to our foreign policy.

Among other points, she referenced Secretary Clinton's focus on "people-to-people diplomacy," which she says is at the heart of smart power, "[building] new partnerships from the bottom up, and "[using] every tool at [their] disposal." Read address as delivered.

On Point
Radio with Tom Ashbrook, WBUR (NPR), June 11, 2009 -
Everybody knows the straight and narrow, up-and-out formula for American success: good grades, good scores, good college, big debt... good luck.

My guests today, Maya and Tom Frost, say forget it. There's a better way, they say. And the path leads abroad - early.
Stay home studying for SATs and taking on college debt, and you're guaranteed nothing in this topsy-turvy economy. Go abroad - as early as high school, especially for college, they say - and you'll find low tuitions, big adventures, and the future. This hour, On Point: A new American way in the world. Going global, right from the start.
