French President Congratulates Cercle Jefferson Association
Washington, DC - On February 23, 2009, the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) alumni association in Paris, France, Cercle Jefferson, mailed copies of their annual alumni directory to members of the association. This year's directory, however, contained a special letter from French President Nicolas Sarkozy, a fellow IVLP alumnus. In the letter, Sarkozy congratulates Cercle Jefferson members on the success of their alumni association and on their contributions to promoting mutual understanding between the French and American peoples. Sarkozy writes, "Please allow me to reiterate my best wishes for the Cercle's success and congratulate you on your efforts to promote French-American friendship." Referring to the International Visitor program, Sarkozy writes that "this program is testament to the vitality and importance of citizen diplomacy, which means that, beyond the borders of a country, each citizen may legitimately advance our ideals and values through meetings and exchanges. These are the democratic values that the French and the Americans hold so dear." Read the full letter on the U.S. Department of State's IVLP website in French and English. |

The Band's Visit
Hebrew and Arabic, with English Subtitles.
Israel 2007, 87 Minutes On an ordinary day, the Alexandria Ceremonial Police Orchestra arrives in Israel from Egypt for a cultural event, only to find there is no delegation to meet them, nor any arrangements to get to their destination of Petah Tiqva. When they find their own ride, they arrive instead at the remote town of Beit Hatikva. Stuck there until the next morning's bus, the band settles in as best it can, each of the members attempting to get along with the natives in their own way. What follows is a special night of quiet happenings and confessions as the band makes its own impact on the town and the town on them. Free and open to the public.
