Akram Belkaid
Salt Lake City - Mr. Akram Belkaid, a guest of the U.S. Department of State's International Visitor Leadership Program, and a Reporter, Le Monde Diplomatique, from France, visited Salt Lake City in January to examine the workings of American government at the Utah State level, as well as religious diversity. Mr. Belkaid's professional appointments included a classroom visit at Westminster College (pictured with Professors Tripp and Haslam), and meetings with Mr. Robert Spendlove, Policy Director, Office of the Utah State Governor; Ms. Pat Bartholomew, Clerk of Court, Utah State Supreme Court; and Mr. Colby Green, Legislative Aide, Office of Senator John L. Valentine, Utah State Legislature, among others. I sat down with Mr. Belkaid and asked him about his visit to Utah. Continue reading.
Photographer aims to save animals
By Nicole Warburton, Deseret Morning News

Macaws Joel Sartore, World Affairs Lecture Series guest speaker in January, was featured in the Deseret Morning News.

"Think your job is bad? Try punching the clock when you must endure filth, flesh-eating parasites and sometimes fatal conditions to finish an assignment. But that's what Joel Sartore does. And he loves it. Sartore is one of about 70 core photographers for National Geographic. His specialty is in photographing vanishing animal species, and sometimes it requires extreme work environments." Continue reading.
Four rules for a better civic life
By Gary Daynes, Associate Provost for Integrative Learning, Westminster College
 Gary Daynes
Salt Lake City
- "Our ability to solve problems, be it through politics or community action, depends on the civic skills of Utah's citizens."

Gov. Jon Huntsman's attention to civic participation in his State of the State address was surely a good thing. Any government whose legitimacy depends on the will of the people ought to be concerned when the people seem uninterested. If the governor wants to improve civic participation in the state, here are four rules he should follow. Continue reading.

Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker said Interfaith Week (through Sunday) is more important than ever in the city because there is more diversity here than ever before. Sponsored by the Salt Lake Interfaith Roundtable (founded in 1999 for the 2002 Olympics), numerous events are scheduled this week. The KiteThe Middle East Through Its Films
The Kite, January 28, 6-9pm,
Utah Museum of Fine Arts
Arabic, with English Subtitles. Lebanon 2008, 80 Minutes.
In director Randa Chahal Sabbag's 'fairytale for troubled times,' sixteen-year old Lamia must cross a border checkpoint between Lebanon and Israel to marry a man she has never met. Neither she nor her betrothed are eager to consummate a marriage to a stranger - a matter further complicated by Lamia's surprising admission that she is in love with the Israeli soldier guarding the border. Sabbag's enchanting drama about marriage and tradition is underscored by delicate symbolism and artful references to politics of Lebanon's territories that have been annexed. Sponsored by the University of Utah's Middle East Center Outreach Program and the Utah Museum of Fine Arts in collaboration with the SLC Film Center.
