Volunteer Opportunity for UCCD
Help International Visitors Navigate Salt Lake City

CompassOne of the most exciting opportunities UCCD brings to the community is the opportunity for person-to-person meetings with International Visitors. Through personal interaction with our Visitors you become an ambassador to the world.

UCCD is now seeking volunteers who can contribute a day of their time serving as a volunteer driver and escort for one or two International Visitors and their interpreter.

You will pick the Visitors up at Little America Hotel at 8:30 am and accompany them to their professional appointments throughout the day; take them to lunch (they will pay for their own meal); and return them to the hotel by 5:00 pm at the latest. UCCD will provide you with their itinerary and maps to each appointment.  Volunteers will be asked to supply identification and proof of insurance.

As a Volunteer Driver You Will
  • Meet and engage with international visitors from around the world
  • Accompany international visitors to their professional meetings and meet with key community leaders
  • Exchange customs and cultures over lunch
  • Help shape a positive image of the United States
  • Make a friend
  • Invest in the Utah Council for Citizen Diplomacy in an important and meaningful way
  • And yes... mileage reimbursement at the Government rate of $.585 per mile (record of mileage required)
Please contact call us to discuss how you can become a UCCD Volunteer Driver by replying to this email or call Jennifer Hefti, Director Communications & Community Outreach, (801) 832-3272 or jhefti@utahdiplomacy.org.
Host International Students
Launching Westminster International Student Hosting (WISH)

Salt Lake City - The Utah Council for Citizen Diplomacy is launching the Westminster International Student Hosting Program (WISH Program) in partnership with Westminster College's Diversity & International Center. Help international students integrate into the local community and shape a positive view of the United States by hosting.

Through Home Hospitality, Westminster College International Students will have the opportunity to spend a casual evening in the home of a UCCD member for dinner and conversation.

Benefits for Home Hosts
  • Befriend students who are far from home
  • Learn about other customs and cultures through the eyes of young men and women
  • Impact your community by helping students shape a positive view of the U.S.

Dates

  • Saturday, October 18, 6-9 p.m.
  • Saturday, November 1, 6-9 p.m.
Students will be placed with Home Host volunteers on a first-come basis. UCCD will make every attempt to place International Students with each Home Host. UCCD looks forward to offering regularly scheduled WISH events throughout the year, depending upon the participation level of both Hosts and Students.

Globetrotter: THAILAND
  • Once known as Siam, Thailand is proud of never having been colonized by Europeans. Thailand
  • Thai is a tonal language, so a given syllable can have different meanings based on pronunciation.
  • In Thailand, it is appropriate to drink water at the end of (but not during) a meal.
  • Visitors to a Thai wat (temple) do not step on the doorsill, as tradition holds that a soul resides there.
Keep updated about UCCD by visiting our website. We look forward to seeing you at an upcoming event!
