Intellectual Property Rights: Key in US-Canadian Economic Relationship
In April, two delegates from Canada visited Utah under the auspices of the Department of State's International Visitor Leadership Program to examine Protecting Intellectual Property Rights.
From left to right: Susan Banks, Virgil Bodeen, Janine
Hancock, Tina Piper, Nina Busuladzic, and Ben Banks
Detective Janine Hancock investigates mass marketing, telemarketing, and internet fraud cases as a member of the Toronto Police Service's Fraud Squad.
Professor Tina Piper explores ways to bring together copyright holders and advocates of fair use at McGill University's Centre for Intellectual Property Policy (CIPP). Her research has focused on the impact of IPR on medicine and patients' rights, and she has been particularly interested in the IP challenges faced by research universities and virtual scientific communities. US Public Diplomacy: What You Can Do
As a part of a recent reader survey, the Stanley Foundation asked for readers' questions about foreign policy issues. One reader asked for suggested next steps for the American public diplomacy effort. Sherry L. Mueller, Ph.D., president of the National Council for International Visitors, offers her suggestions in the Foundation's March email, think.
Public diplomacy, a term coined by Ambassador Edmund Gullion, dean of the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy in the 1960s, has been the subject of many government reports, academic studies, and op-ed columns in recent years. Authors have prescribed varied remedies for US public diplomacy-diagnosing government efforts to positively impact public opinion abroad as poorly funded and lacking structure. What should be done to counter accelerating and increasingly virulent anti-Americanism around the world? Continue reading...

Utah Citizen Diplomats:
What You Can Do
As Senator John F. Kennedy said, "Citizen" is an office we hold, and with it comes certain rights and responsibilities. One of them is to help shape U.S. foreign relations "one handshake at a time."
As a member of UCCD, you are invited to interact one-on-one with emerging leaders from around the world. Here are a few ways you can engage in building a truly global community:
- Airport Greeting: Welcome International Visitors at the airport on the day of their arrival and extend a warm Utah greeting.
- Volunteer Driver: Escort small groups of International Visitors (those that do not have vans or buses arranged for their transportation) to their professional appointments and to lunch.
- Lunch with Leaders: Host International Visitors for lunch, and engage in one-on-one conversation.
- Home Hospitality: Host International Visitors for dinner and get the chance to share your opinions and gain insights into other viewpoints with informed professionals from abroad.
- Tour Utah: Represent our city for a day of sightseeing, cultural events, or outdoor activities.
If you are interested in volunteering for any of these activities, please call Nina Busuladzic at (801) 832-3273 or email nbusuladzic@utahdiplomacy.org

Corrections
In our last issue, Victoria BRINTON, UCCD's Board Member and docent volunteer, was misidentified. The person featured in the photograph was Victoria BRINTON. Victoria BUTLER is the co-author of Sudan: The Land and the People. Ms. Brinton, a professional educator, volunteered her time and expertise with Utah area schoolchildren during the Sudan photo exhibit. We thank her wholeheartedly for her commitment to UCCD's education outreach and apologize for the error. |
Keep updated about UCCD by visiting our website. We look forward to seeing you at an upcoming event!
Sincerely,
Jennifer Hefti, Director of Communications & Community Outreach |
