Sleep Apnea

A number of health studies have shown that African-American men who have trouble falling asleep are at risk for having memory problems as they grow older. Nevertheless, the discovery raises the possibility that by identifying and treating sleep difficulties now, we may preserve our cognitive functioning in our golden and platinum years.

Sleep apnea is a disorder of interrupted breathing during sleep. It usually occurs in association with fat buildup or loss of muscle tone with aging. These changes allow the windpipe to collapse during breathing when muscles relax during sleep. This problem, called obstructive sleep apnea, is usually associated with loud snoring (though not everyone who snores has this disorder). Sleep apnea also can occur if the neurons that control breathing malfunction during sleep.

·    What can we do as African American men to curtail the negative
effects that sleep apnea may cause on our lives, our health and our
     daily functioning?

·    What are the symptoms?

·    What are the treatments?

·    What is the success rate of returning to 'normalcy'?

The Business of Healthcare...

THE PROBLEM

Forty years after the passage of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King's landmark civil rights legislation, People of Color still-in the Age of Obama--face inequalities in health coverage, provider access, and overall health status. Uninsured adults are less likely to receive preventive care, screening services, and appropriate acute or chronic disease management, and they are more likely to have poorer overall health compared to insured individuals. Lack of health insurance often forces people to put off getting needed medical care because they cannot afford the out-of-pocket cost of health services. These problems disproportionately affect African Americans, who--in 2004 according to U.S. Census statistics--make up about 13 percent of the population but who represent 19.7 percent of the uninsured, and Hispanics who make up 14.8 percent, but 32.7 percent respectively.

Older Gentleman

·    Did you know that in 2004, African American men were 1.4 times as likely to have new cases of lung and prostate cancer compared to non-Hispanic white men?

·    Did you know that African American adults were 1.9 times more likely than non-Hispanic white adults to have been diagnosed with diabetes by a physician?

·    Did you know that in 2005, African American men were 30% more likely to die from heart disease, as compared to non-Hispanic white men?

SOME SOLUTIONS

Same Gender Loving Men of Color should be and will be major consumers within the American healthcare environment.  But what does that environment entail?  The trick to success in the current, unstable healthcare environment is to be an educated consumer.  This portion of the workshop will talk about Healthcare 101... knowing the basic terminology that you may hear or encounter during your visit. Moving on to the healthcare financing issue, and how to keep from being swallowed by the healthcare financial bullet and then concluding with your rights as a patient in securing the most appropriate forms of healthcare.

All this and more will be covered in the March 14th meeting at 4:30pm here at ADODI New York.

Salud! Aché!

"ADODI Wholeness: Lives of Power and Possibilities"

Wednesday, July 15th - Sunday,  July 19th, 2009

Brutha's Head - ADODI Wholeness 2009

Greetings From The Brotherhood Of ADODI:

We invite all same gender loving men of African heritage

to join us in the gathering for our 23rd Annual ADODI Retreat:

"ADODI Wholeness: Lives of Power and Possibilities"

Wednesday, July 15th - Sunday, July 19th, 2009

At The White Eagle Conference Center in Hamilton NY

"ADODI Wholeness: Lives of Power and Possibilities" is about enriching how we live our best, whole self. One decision, one action at a time. As SGL (same gender loving) African American men, our caring makes us human, and our crafts and communities make us whole. During the retreat we will explore the power each of us possesses, and how we share it with others, the culture we continue to build with our many gifts, and the communities we strengthen, nurturing the bonds of possibilities in the many ways we do.

Our three sub-themes are Power, Culture and Community. The sub-themes will be the theme for one of each of our
three full retreat days:
Thursday: Power
Friday: Culture
Saturday: Community

We hope that you can join us for what will undoubtedly be a powerful and memorable experience. One that we hope will inspire new possibilities.
