WE GIVE THANKS

Brotherhood of the Survivor

This holiday season, we want to give thanks for the strength and beauty of all same gender loving (SGL) men of African descent who have inspired us and kept us strong in this society for nearly 400 years. Even through homophobia, our desire to be could not be stopped by the oppressive measures that prevented--to a limited but often frightening extent--our right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Nevertheless, ado, gay, two spirit, or SGL men of color have bonded through spiritual will and have been an integral part of our political, social and economic foundation--in every generation--expressing and containing our culture's highest ideals that enable us to thrive today.

We give thanks for our mothers, fathers, sisters and brothers, who had the courage to love us just as we are, and for the mother, father, sister and brother figures who do so anyhow when our own could not. Indeed, we are thankful for the children who have come into our lives; the families of friends, relatives, and neighbors who relish life in all its drama and-- through their love--support us no matter what the tensions and difficulties are in ourselves.

The emotional ties that bind us are also woven through the unity of faiths that are the sustaining fabric of our community. Our spiritual beliefs and practices are the bedrock of our souls. For that we give thanks, and we pray that all our religious communities continue to sustain us.

We give thanks for the ability to build communities through our cultural traditions. One example of the unique ways we do this through the potluck Thanksgiving celebration here at ADODI on Saturday, November 8th at 4PM.  This event, along with our holidays and reunions continue to keep us together during modern times, which seem engineered to keep us apart.

And finally, we give thanks for the opportunity to live in a land that--albeit slowly-fulfills it constitutional promise. At the time of this writing, Barack Obama has over 300 of the 270 electoral votes needed to become the President of the United States. Should our Greatest Spiritual Power permit Obama to win, he will not only alter African or American or World History, but the destiny of humanity itself.

Amen and Aché

ADODI's HERITAGE

(Established in Philadelphia, PA in 1986)
IN OUR 22nd YEAR!

ADODI, the plural of ADO,
is a Yoruba word that describes a man who "loves" another man.
More than just a description of partners in Africa, the ADODI
of the tribe are thought to embody both male and female ways
of being and were revered as shamans, sages and leaders.

Who is ADODI?
ADODI is a community of men of color who affirm their

encourage the self-discovery, validation, empowerment and
liberation of all members of our diverse community.
