Hello Alaska,
Did you hear that Shaquille O'Neal retired from professional basketball this week? It wasn't ESPN, another TV station, or a sports reporter that broke the news. The first to know, were his 4 million+ followers (the most of any athlete) on Twitter. Twitter can be a very useful medium and there are tools to help you maximize its effectiveness. There are hundreds that have been developed in the last two years and almost equally as many that are now no longer in business. Here are a few that stuck around - 1) TweetDeck Now owned by Twitter, this all in one tool allows the management of multiple accounts It has downloads and applications for computers, phones and pads. 2) WeFollow Find new followers based on a keyword search 3) Timely Schedule tweets to be posted at pre-determined times 4) Nearby Tweets A geography-centric social tool for networking and a business tool for building customer relationships and monitoring real-time buzz. 5) Twitaholic More Twitter statistics than you ever needed When you finally take the plunge and decide to begin using this tool to distribute your business message to the masses, please remember that content is paramount. How you say something is equally as important as what you say. This short video illustrates that point very well.
Does this look familiar? Facebook now has a dislike button! Click 'Enable Dislike Button' to turn on the new feature! Like the "Preventing Spam / Verify my account" scam which went before it, the scammers have managed to waltz past Facebook's security to replace the standard "Share" option with a link labeled "Enable Dislike Button". The fact that the "Enable Dislike Button" link does not appear in the main part of the message, but lower down alongside "Link" and "Comment", is likely to fool some users into believing that it is genuine. Clicking on the link, however, will not only forward the fake message about the so-called "Fakebook Dislike button" to all of your online friends by posting it to your profile, but also run obfuscated Javascript (which, after looking it up, I now know means "a source, or machine code that has been made difficult to understand for humans") on your computer. The potential for malice should be obvious. Although many of us would find it useful, there is no official dislike button provided by Facebook and there isn't ever likely to be one. See you next week!
