Hello Alaska,
I would love to give you a report on how well we are doing with the survey, but Winnie has the key to that information and she is gallivanting around in Europe somewhere. No text, no email and no card to date, so she must be having fun. She'll be back in time to send next week's newsletter from here, so I will have survey details then.
If you haven't done so, please help us gather some data by taking our survey. It should only take a couple of minutes and just for completing it, you are entered to win one of several nice prizes, which include an overnight stay (with dinner and breakfast) at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Anchorage, a $50 gift certificate to either the Glacier Brewhouse, or Orso restaurants and a few $25 Kaladi Brothers gift cards.

After giving Fairview a makeover some time ago, efforts are ongoing in Anchorage to re-energize Mountain View. In partnership with the Federal Government, the State of Alaska, the Municipality of Anchorage and private Foundations, the Anchorage Community Land Trust (a Mountain View landowner and advocacy organization), is working diligently to attract new businesses and development to the neighborhood. Among their successes are:
- Credit Union 1 opened its Mountain View branch in June 2010, and its experience has outstripped its expectations. The credit union has opened hundreds of new accounts, demonstrating that its investment in Mountain View was not just a social enterprise, but a successful business decision. In addition, the employees at the branch frequently say that it is one of the best, most engaging branches to work at.
- Cook Inlet Housing Authority has invested over $83 million over the past 10 years in Mountain View, purchasing properties and building homes for owners and renters. CIHA's homes have brought more mixed-income residents to Mountain View and have imbued the neighborhood with a sense of pride. CIHA has also constructed two major mixed-use developments that offer street-level commercial space with rental units above. Office spaces in the 1200 sq.ft. range are available now, with new spaces starting at 900 sq.ft. available soon.
- Other housing organizations such as NeighborWorks, RurAL CAP and Habitat for Humanity have spent millions more providing high-quality homes and apartments throughout the neighborhood.
According to the ACLT, Mountain View's young and diverse population of 7000 residents, access to another 25,000 potential customers within a 1.5 mile radius, as well its perfect location along some of Anchorage's main thoroughfares are just some of the reasons businesses should consider relocating, or opening another location in this part of town.
The message is clear! Mountain View offers businesses a dynamic place to prosper, with a great location and a diverse community unlike any other in Anchorage. Mountain View truly is a viable place to do business.
To learn more, the Anchorage Community Land Trust, will be hosting a free event in Mountain View to bring entrepreneurs and small business owners from around Anchorage and the state together with lenders, service venders, training resource providers and real estate developers for face-to-face consultations on April 22nd. For more information please contact Stuart Bannan from ACLT at 274-0191 or lbannan@anchoragelandtrust.org
