Hello Alaska,
If this were a democracy I would now offer you potential topics for the newsletter, with you able to choose the one that you'd like. They would be:
- Insider tips for business Facebook
- Confessions of an Alaskan Metrosexual
- The dreaded "send all" and "reply all"
- The first annual Lemonade Day in Anchorage
As much as I want to tell you about the changing face of the "Alaskan man", the do's and don'ts of emailing that are continually being violated in our work places, or the phenomenal event that is "Lemonade Day", this newsletter is reserved for some insider Facebook tips directly from the horse's mouth. Ever-evolving and ever-growing, Facebook is no longer simply the realm of networking teenagers. For many customers, Facebook is now their defacto site for interacting with friends, family, and their favorite brands.
We spent time sifting through hundreds of pages of information to report it here in a concise format that will hopefully help you navigate the social medial realm with greater expertise!
Let's start with the most frequent Facebook mistakes -
1) Businesses creating a profile instead of a page.
Pages weren't out when Facebook first started and all functionality that Facebook has added for businesses since then, including more advanced analytics, has been focused on pages.
2) Not allowing engagement.
§ Facebook is a viral networking vehicle and shutting off comments, turning off your wall, or not posting content, completely defeats the purpose of the tool.
3) Believing that wall posts on your fan page automatically reach a broad audience.
- Facebook has an algorithm called EdgeRank that calculates the quality of a post and that score in turn determines how many people will see it. Scores are determined by a variety of factors which include:
- Number of "likes" to the post
- Number of comments
- Number of shares
- Time period in which these elements occur
Miscellaneous data -
- The optimum frequency to post is every other day and planning out your posts a week ahead of time is not a bad idea.
- You should experiment with a variety of different posts including videos, blog articles and questions for your audience.
- Try to post about current topics (like Sunday night's Oscars on Monday morning) because of the heightened engagement value, but skew the content so it applies to your business.
-
New significant modification to Facebook -
- The ability to switch from your personal profile to pages you administer simply by clicking on the "Account" tab in the upper right corner and then on the "Use Facebook as Page" tab. You can also quickly go back by hitting the tabs in reverse.
- The addition of Facebook Places allows businesses with physical locations, especially retailers, to offer "deals" and direct traffic back to their location.
- Soon you'll start seeing the Comments Box of some of your favorite blogs and websites across the web on your Facebook page. You'll be able to easily make public comments on other sites using your Facebook account, while seeing more relevant comments, less spam and an option to share your comments with your friends back on Facebook.
One of the items I found, but disagree with is the notion that posting in the mornings and on weekends increases the engagement on your page. Facebook has moved out of recreational use, into the workplace, both as a communication tool between employees and as a means to stay informed. Recent statistics have shown that employees spend hours on Facebook every day at work and although the engagement isn't constant, they consistently respond to posts that are directed to them, or interest them.
Two weeks from now, look for the ever-popular, annual, Buy Alaska Member Survey! This will be your opportunity to once again let us know what works, what doesn't (as if)and what we can do to better serve you! Stay tuned!!
Renewable Energy Alaska Project (REAP) Forum -
Geothermal Power in Akutan
March 9, 6-8pm · Anchorage Museum, 625 C Street · FREE
The City of Akutan last summer drilled and found 359-degree water at shallow depths in an effort to develop what could be the first commercial-scale geothermal energy plant in Alaska. The plant could provide power and heat to the town of Akutan and to the Trident Seafoods fish processing facility. Come join us for REAP's FREE Forum and hear the latest on this project and the role it could play in the use of geothermal power in Alaska.
