Transforming lives since 1989

"I think I needed the stars all around me
and all of you here, for me to see how far I've come, and what I've learned,
and what I want to do with my life..." BCM teen, 2009
Every
summer, the Big City Mountaineers offices across the country become a buzz.
Expeditions gear up, volunteers work out last-minute details, and teens anxious and excited get their gear:
boots, socks, rain gear, headlamps, backpacks - everything they'll need for 7
or 8 days out in the wilderness. It is a time we as staff cherish - a chance to
see who we are really working for. The highlight is when the teens come back through after a week in the field - you can see they've accomplished something truly meaningful.
This summer, we
plan to deliver 43 weeklong trips for 215 urban teens and each of
those trips has a direct cost of $3,200. In a year of bad news for nonprofits,
and the forecast of bad news to come, we're even more committed to still making
a difference for those 215 teens. We're asking for your help. We're asking for
a $50 donation, to cover the costs of food, transportation, sunscreen,
permits, and all the things that go into a week in the wilderness.

"My first BCM trip not only allowed me to experience life outside of my comfort zone, but I think that it prepared me for my future better than I thought it would"
2009 BCM teen
Not all of our climbers, donors, volunteers, stakeholders, supporters, teachers and guides can see firsthand the magic of a BCM trip, but that doesn't mean you aren't vitally, crucially important to the work we do. We believe, with your help we can achieve a lasting presence and transform the lives of under-resourced teens. We thank you for all your support andask for your helpthis summer by donating to BCM.
With your support we will transform the lives of urban teens across the country. Thank you for making this possible.

We recently caught up
with BCM 2008 alumni Alberto Munguia del
Toro.
"I
don't know what life could have been like. I could have
turned for the worse," reflects Alberto when asked how he has changed
since
before he took his first backpacking trip two years ago. Now, at 16, he is a
seasoned
veteran with almost 60 back-country days under his belt! Alberto
is one of the rare students who was not nervous when he showed up on the
first
day of the week-long BCM backpacking expedition he took in the Snowy
Mountain
Range in Wyoming....read more.

Why I climb
by
Amy O'Connell
I never thought
climbing mountains would
become 'my thing' when I was pushing one of my inner
city teens to get up what
she considered a mountain of her own. How could I possibly push
her up what I
considered a small hill if I didn't know how she was feeling? It was at that
moment 3 summers ago, that I decided to sign up for a Summit For Someone
climb
up Mt. Shasta. Never climbing before and being afraid of heights, I had
no idea
what I was getting into. What I didn't realize was how much I would LOVE
the
solitude of the mountains, exhilaration, pride and feeling of
accomplishment
climbing would bring me. This summer I will be climbing a 3rd time with
Summit
For Someone. My BCM girls inspired me to climb and I am so grateful that
BCM
and SFS have given me the opportunity to inspire others. I am a wife,
mother,
volunteer, and now...a climber!
