IN THEIR WORDS.....
JUNE 2009 NEWSLETTER

Map Reading  Dear BCM Supporters,

As you might have read in my Executive
Director letter of our 2008 Annual
Report, I've been feeling sorry for myself
lately.  Luckily, my recent pity party
brought on by the economic slowdown
has been transformed into taking action on behalf of those less fortunate who have experienced an 'economic downturn' throughout their lives.

Taking action has gone a long way in changing my outlook. If, like me, you've been wallowing in worry, I encourage you to join me in changing your perspective.  Now is the time to turn all this doom and gloom into positive action either on behalf of BCM or another non-profit that is meaningful to you.  You'll be helping out your community and yourself.

If you are wondering what you can do that might be useful in helping our organization, here are three suggestions:
  • Forward this newsletter to five friends, explain what BCM means to you and ask them to get involved.
  • Skip a coffee for the next few days and, instead, donate $20 to help BCM get out our planned 150+ teens in our RELATE program this summer.
  • Combine the above two suggestions by participating in our Change a Life Campaign running through September 15, 2009.  Keen Footwear and Northern Mountain Supply have teamed up to make it worth your while.
 teen 2008

In less than 30 days, BCM will embark on our 20th year of summer programming that will initiate a journey of discovery for hundreds of teens.  Thank you for the part you have played in making our work possible.

Executive Director

Jeff Chow photoJeffrey Chow - why wilderness is so important for our youth

The story below was originally given as a speech by Jeffrey Chow at a silent auction to benefit BCM in Spring of 2009

  AT as a Dream
There are some people who decide to hike the
Appalachian Trail on a whim. But for many, hiking the
entire AT is a lifelong dream. Someone like my friend
Old Drum. He caught the idea as a kid and spent years
researching and planning for when he retired and finally
had the means to do it. Multiple gear-shakedown trip, extended training sessions walking around his relatively flat block in Missouri, pack on back. He took trips to hike small segments of the trail to experience the terrain. But for many more it will remain a dream unfulfilled. They wait for their kids to move out of the house, they wait to retire. They wait to be in shape or otherwise find the perfect moment. And they wait, and it remains something they idealize in their heads while at work thinking of 6 months in the woods living the simple life where you live off the land catching fish with your bare hands and drinking, lips pressed to crystal clear waters lapping up giardia and cryptosporidium. - Ok, so they're not dreaming about that but their dreams may include a pack filled with marshmallows and chocolate.
