With the exception of Bill Gates, the name most synonymous with global health is Paul Farmer. Now a new fund has been established at DGHI to support the next generation of "Paul Farmers." Read more about the generous donation that led to the creation of this fund.

Fund Named for Paul Farmer to Support Duke Undergraduate Global Health Fieldwork
The Duke Global Health Institute announces the creation of a new global health fieldwork fund in the name of Paul Farmer, a global health pioneer, Duke alumnus and member of DGHI's Board of
Partners in Health co-founder Paul Farmer is also a member of DGHI's Board of Advisors. | Advisors. In his honor, The Paul Farmer Global Health Fund will support undergraduate fieldwork and research projects at Duke that exemplify Farmer's commitment to serving the world's poorest populations.
Farmer co-founded Partners in Health in 1987 to provide medical care and social services to populations in need across 12 countries. For the past two decades, Farmer has worked to raise the standard of care in underdeveloped areas of the world, including his work to improve health care delivery in the central plateau of Haiti.
"Clearly, today's world needs more Paul Farmers and I hope that the Paul Farmer Global Health Fund enables more Duke students to experience fieldwork in global health," said Dave Gendell, a Duke alumnus and fraternity brother of Farmer, who established the fund. "It is imperative to continue to invest in the people who are the next leaders and innovators in the global health field."

Environmental Economist Randy Kramer Accepts New Role at DGHI
DGHI member Randy Kramer, professor of Environmental Economics at the Nicholas School of the Environment, has accepted the position of Associate Director for Strategy at the Duke Global Health Institute. In his new role, Kramer will oversee DGHI's strategic planning, faculty recruitment and development, and international operations. He will also continue to lead DGHI's signature research initiative on global environmental health, as well as teach and conduct research at the Nicholas School. Read more.

Zeck is based at KCMC in Moshi. | returned to the Duke-Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Center (KCMC) Collaboration this month as an adjunct associate professor with an appointment at the Duke Global Health Institute.
Zeck's primary responsibilities include facilitating educational and training goals of the Duke-KCMC Collaboration and the Global Health Residency, conducting research in the maternal health and coordinating all aspects of the Duke-KCMC Collaboration in Women's Health. New York City Mayor Bloomberg Appoints DGHI Board Member and Former US Treasury Official Robert Steel as Deputy Mayor for Economic Development

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg today appointed former Under Secretary for Domestic Finance at the U.S. Department of Treasury Robert K. Steel as Deputy Mayor for Economic Development. From 2006 to 2008, Deputy Mayor Steel served as chief advisor to the Treasury Secretary on financial and economic matters. Prior to that appointment, he spent 28 years at Goldman Sachs, ultimately rising to co-head of the U.S. Equities Division and Vice Chairman of the firm. He later co-founded SeaChange Capital Partners, a national nonprofit that helps nonprofits grow. After leaving the Treasury Department, Deputy Mayor Steel became president and CEO of Wachovia bank, leading its business-saving merger with Wells Fargo. In 2009, he completed his term as chair of the board of Duke University, and he currently serves on the Duke Global Health Institute Board of Advisors. Read more.
DGHI Faculty Member Greets Prince Charles at Meeting on Islam and the Environment
 Several Duke faculty got a royal reception during a visit to the Oxford Center for Islamic Studies last week. Sociologist Jen'nan Read, a faculty member of the Duke Global Health Institute, met Prince Charles after a speech in Oxford's Sheldonian Theatre on Islam and the environment. Read more.

Division of Children's Primary Care Receives Teaching Award
Clements is Division Chief of Children's Primary Care. | Duke's Division of Children's Primary Care in the Department of Pediatrics, under the leadership of DGHI Senior Advisor Dennis Clements, has been awarded the Arena-Palumbo Resident Teaching Award. It is given annually to the division residents feel contributes most to their education and professional development.
"I think this is a wonderful testament to everyone's hard work and dedication to teaching the residents and medical students while taking care of patients," said Clements.
The annual meeting of the Consortium of Universities for Global Health (CUGH) is September 19-21. The theme is: "Transforming Global Health: The Interdisciplinary Power of Universities." CUGH is accepting abstract submissions through July 1. Read more.
