Weekly News and Notes From the Duke Global Health Institute
Greetings!
We are grateful to the Duke community and readers of Weekly News and Notes for your support of Family Health Ministries' earthquake relief efforts over the past week. Many of you responded to the call to action and have offered resources to support the Haitian people.
Family Health Ministries is continuing to solicit "wound care" supplies and financial donations. For more information and to hear a firsthand account of the courageous efforts currently under way, watch the short video of David Walmer (recorded last week).
In other news, this Friday is the deadline for applying for the Master of Science in Global Health. Find a link to the application below. Also, DGHI has just released a Request for Proposal to support faculty research in the areas of gender, poverty and health.
Until next week,
Geelea Seaford and Everyone at DGHI

Haiti Relief Efforts Continue
Thanks to the support of Duke President Dick Brodhead, Chancellor Victor Dzau, and the entire Duke University community, Family Health Ministries (FHM), DGHI's partner in Haiti, has delivered life-saving supplies and medicines to Haitian communities in need. Less than a week after the devastating earthquake, FHM had mobilized dozens of volunteers and generated thousands in donations to support their relief efforts. Within 48 hours of receiving medical supplies and medications from Duke Medical Center, the donated goods were on the ground and being used at the FHM clinic in Leogane, about 20 miles west of Port-au-Prince. In addition, a medical team, including two Duke physicians and FHM executive director Kathy Walmer, depart Wednesday for Haiti to provide medical services and deliver much-needed supplies.
Last week, Dr. David Walmer, FHM founder and DGHI member, spoke about the earthquake relief efforts to a Duke class taught by Dr. Dennis Clements. Watch this short video of David and learn about the innovative way FHM is delivering supplies and medicines to the rural communities of Haiti.
Want to know more about DGHI's partner Family Health Ministries and its programs? Here are two opportunities:
Watch FHM founder and board chairman David Walmer on North Carolina People with Bill Friday on WUNC-TV on Friday, January 29, at 9 pm, and Sunday, January 31, at 5:30 pm. The episode was taped prior to the Haiti earthquake, but will give a good perspective on FHM's work in the impoverished country.
See an interview with Dr. Delson Merisier, adjunct Duke faculty member and Family Health Ministries' OB/GYN in Leogane, tonight on NBC-17 News at 6, 7, and 11 pm in the Raleigh/Durham area. He will also be featured on an upcoming edition of WUNC's The Story with Dick Gordon.
Upcoming Events Benefit Haiti Relief
The Chaplain's Office of Duke Divinity School is sponsoring the "Hope for Haiti Benefit Concert" on Friday, February 5. Dancer Gaspard Louis, violinist Reginald Patterson, blues guitarist Toby Bonar and other artists and poets will perform at 7:30 p.m. in Page Auditorium.
The Duke-UNC Rotary Fellows will also be hosting a silent auction on Friday, February 5 at 5:30-7:30 at the FedEx Global Education Center at UNC.

New and Noteworthy
New Partnerships Expand Duke's Presence in China
Duke University has forged two new cooperative partnerships in China which will significantly increase the university's presence in that country and create new opportunities for education, research and public service.
The partnership agreements were formally announced today during Duke President Richard H. Brodhead's trip to China, which culminated in a groundbreaking ceremony at the site of a planned Duke University campus in the city of Kunshan. Kunshan, located in the Yangtze River Delta, boasts one of the fastest-growing economies in China.
The Duke-Kunshan campus, a partnership between the university and the municipal government, will include a five-building teaching, research and residential center built by the municipal government.
Duke's Fuqua School of Business will lead the first phase, which will focus on executive MBA and non-degree executive education programs, a pre-experience management training master's degree, training of Ph.D. students and the recruitment of top faculty. Duke's educational partner in this venture is Shanghai Jiao Tong University, one of the leading universities in China.
Future activity on the Duke-Kunshan campus will include programs from the Duke Global Health Institute and Duke's schools of public policy and environment as education and research opportunities are developed.

Partners in Health co-founder Paul Farmer addressed the complexity of today's global health challenges at an alumni event in Washington, D.C.
In October, Farmer was the featured guest at " The Duke Idea" in the capitol, in which nearly 500 alumni attended. The panel also included President Richard Brodhead and Chancellor for Health Affairs Victor Dzau. Farmer, also a member of DGHI's Board of Advisors and a Duke Trustee, spoke about the challenges of narrowing global health disparities, the scarcity of trained health professionals, environmental health issues and the growing burden of pandemic and infectious diseases in developing countries. He emphasized the need for a long-term, health systems approach that builds on sustainable solutions.
The year-long series of events taking place all over the nation seeks to engage alumni in wide-ranging conversations about Duke's vision for the university of the 21st century. |
