Weekly News and Notes From the Duke Global Health Institute
Greetings!
Today DGHI is excited to announce the creation and membership of its first external Board of Advisors. Among this distinguished group of business, health and philanthropic leaders are Duke Alums (Paul Farmer and Bob Steel), international global health experts (Chris Elias and Helene Gayle), and policy influencers (US Sen. Bill Frist and Peter Piot). Find the full list of members and description of the Board's charge below.
Also this week, DGHI is pleased to host the first meeting of an exploratory research committee on global mental health. WHO estimates that 154 million worldwide suffer from depression. This is just one of the many global mental health issues this group will discuss.
Finally, we hope you will join us next Monday, Dec 14 from 4-6 pm at the DGHI holiday celebration where we will take time to celebrate the year's accomplishments and show thanks to the many people who helped make it a success.
Until next week,
Geelea Seaford and Everyone at DGHI |

Duke Global Health Institute Launches Board of Advisors
The Duke Global Health Institute is pleased to announce the creation of a Board of Advisors comprised of leaders in global health, business and philanthropy. The Board marks a major milestone in the history of the three-year-old Institute.
Board members are appointed by the President of the University to three-year terms, and may serve more than one term. The first meeting will take place in April 2010.
"By combining global health visionaries like Duke Alumnus Paul Farmer, with business and financial stalwarts, we'll be able to take the Institute to the next level," said Michael H. Merson, founding director of the Duke Global Health Institute, who serves as an ex officio member of the Board. "Individuals of this caliber will be invaluable advisors on matters of strategic planning, priority setting and fundraising. I look forward to working with this dynamic group."
The Board will eventually consist of twenty members; additional members will be added over the coming months. The Board will be chaired by Thomas M. Gorrie, current chair of the Duke University Health System Board of Directors and member of the Duke Board of Trustees.
"I am impressed by Duke's commitment to global health and the Institute's partnership across Duke Medicine and the schools of the University, which is required to address health disparities," said Gorrie. "The Institute continues to form partnerships with universities and institutions throughout the world. These partners are critical to fulfilling the Institute's mission."
Recent Duke Graduate Christine McKenna is excited to serve on the Board. McKenna earned the global health certificate in addition to her degree in Public Policy Studies. She now works as senior associate at Global Health Strategies, an international consulting company that works to ensure development and worldwide delivery of health products, technologies and information.
"I am thrilled to represent my fellow DGHI alumni and current Duke undergraduates on the board," said McKenna. "The ability to study global health as an undergraduate - to learn about the issues and how the global health community functions as a whole - has opened doors for me that I never knew existed. The formation of this board shows that the Institute is committed not only to expanding its role in the fight against global health inequities, but also to providing more students with the opportunity to receive this unique education."

New and Noteworthy
DGHI Hosts Visit From Deputy Director of New Global Health Institute at UK's Imperial College
Earlier this year, the prestigious Imperial College in London created an Institute for Global Health that builds upon the university's strengths in scientific research to develop and evaluate innovative solutions for health. As the new institute seeks to expand its international partnerships and global health education programs, it has looked to the Duke Global Health Institute for assistance.
Last week, DGHI hosted a visit to Durham by Imperial's Institute for Global Health Deputy Director Geoffrey Garnett. During the visit Garnett met with Duke faculty and students, and delivered a University Seminar on Global Health. DGHI Director Michael Merson serves on the institute's advisory board.
"I have talked to Mike at great length about how to start up a successful global health institute," said Garnett. "My hope for this institute is that we develop flagship projects and become recognized for developing collaborations with overseas universities and organizations."
"It is an honor to work with Garnett as they also move toward the development of a world-class global health institute at Imperial College," said Merson.
Imperial College is currently exploring several global health field site opportunities, which include Rwanda and the National University of Rwanda. "It's more about supporting existing programs in the field, strengthening them and building upon them," Garnett said.
DGHI Forms Interdisciplinary Committee to Explore Issues Related to Global Mental Health
A new exploratory committee on global mental health, created by the Duke Global Health Institute and the Duke Department of Psychiatry, will meet for the first time later this week.
This Committee will assess current interest at Duke in global mental health issues, as well as canvas the university's strengths and identify opportunities for future development. Committee members will focus on disorders with the greatest impact on the global burden of disease, and may consider opportunities to engage in epidemiologic research, assess interventions in clinical trials, and address health care workforce development.
Dr. David Steffens, a psychiatrist at Duke University Medical Center, will chair the committee.

More Details Released on Obama Administration's Global Health Initiative
A new policy brief and chartpack from the Kaiser Family Foundation provide a detailed breakdown of the U.S. budget for the global health programs in President Obama's new Global Health Initiative, announced in May 2009.
The Global Health Initiative, a six-year, $63 billion proposed effort, would for the first time develop a comprehensive, U.S. government-wide strategy for global health focused on the health challenges and needs of those in low- and middle-income countries. The initiative builds on the Bush Administration's efforts to address HIV, TB, and malaria through the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and President's Malaria Initiative, but also broadens and augments the focus on other global health challenges, particularly maternal and child health, family planning and reproductive health, and neglected tropical diseases.
The brief provides an overview of the projected budget for the Global Health Initiative, including the $8.6 billion proposed by the Administration in its pending fiscal year 2010 request and the $8.4 billion approved in fiscal year 2009. It examines the different U.S. programs that would fall under the Global Health Initiative over time, tracking data back to fiscal year 2001.
