Weekly News and Notes From the Duke Global Health Institute
Greetings!
It's Global Health Week at Duke and there are many activities taking place on campus, including today's event featuring the Lost Boys of Sudan. In addition, don't miss the global health exhibit in the display cases on the first floor of Duke North Hospital featuring samples of work from Hubert-Yeargan Center, Duke Global Health Institute, REMEDY, Engineering World Health and the School of Nursing.
Also, it's almost time to register for Fall 2009 courses. Duke students should pay special attention to the wide range of global health certificate, Focus and Master of Science courses offered next semester.
Until Next Week,
Geelea Seaford and Everyone at DGHI |

Duke Formalizes Partnership in Haiti
The Duke Global Health Institute, Hubert-Yeargan Center, Duke OB/GYN, and Family Health Ministries (FHM) have joined forces to formalize Duke's involvement in Leogane, Haiti. Under the leadership of David Walmer, associate professor in reproductive endocrinology and fertility, and chairman of Family Health Ministries, fieldwork opportunities will be available to Duke global health residents; undergraduate, graduate and professional students; and faculty interested in conducting research in Haiti.
This Duke partnership builds on FHM's more than 15-year presence in Haiti. In January 2009, it opened a new maternal child clinic in Leogane and will open a pathology lab in April as part of its cervical cancer screening program. FHM is also about to begin construction on the Leogane Family Health and Research Center which will include a clinic, office space and a guesthouse to accommodate faculty and students.
To help raise funds for the new clinic, FHM will host "Celebrate Haiti" on May 2 at 6 pm at the Kirby Winter Garden at the Fuqua School of Business. The event will feature Haitian artwork and silent and live auctions. Tickets are $35 when purchased before April 30. Click here to purchase tickets online. |

Job Opportunity: DGHI Student Summer Position
The Duke Global Health Institute is looking for part-time or full-time student help for the summer months.
Kenyan Medical Student Buddy Program The Hubert-Yeargan Center in collaboration with Moi University in Eldoret, Kenya hosts two top Kenyan medical students each spring. This year, the Kenyan students will be arriving on April 13th, for a five week exchange. They will shadow teams on Gen Med and Infectious Disease. We are looking to recruit Duke Medical Student Buddies to help welcome their Kenyan counterparts. (Please note that we do not expect buddies to be on the same service.) Expectations include establishing a connection with your buddy, meeting with them several times over their stay (once a week or every other week). It can be as simple as meeting for coffee or chatting over a cafeteria dinner! This is a great opportunity for students who know the value of mentorship for an international experience and want to give back.
