Weekly News and Notes
From the Duke Global Health Institute

Greetings!

Welcome to the new and improved Weekly News and Notes from the Duke Global Health Institute.  With this new format we hope to make it easier for you to find the "news you can use" related to global health activities at Duke and beyond.  Thus, you will find a section dedicated to education and funding specifically for students, and one dedicated to faculty grants and opportunities. (Don't miss the new DGHI Calls for Proposals.)

As always, your opinions are important to us. We also welcome your ideas on the types of information we share in this email. Send your ideas and comments to gseaford@duke.edu.

Until next week,
Geelea Seaford and Everyone at DGHI

Merson comments on Bush legacy, PEPFAR in Vanity Fair
As quoted in the February issue of Vanity Fair,  "An Oral History of the Bush White House" by Cullen Murphy and Todd S. Purdum:

Look, PEPFAR is the largest commitment ever made by any nation for a global health activity that's dedicated to a single disease. I mean, that's just not disputable. It has a prevention component, a treatment component, and a care component, but treatment is the centerpiece. The last number I've seen is that this initiative has led to treatment of more than 1.7 million people, most of them in Africa. Now, that's not all the people who need treatment, but it's a huge amount. PEPFAR at least tripled our aid flow to Africa-I'm talking about total aid flow.

                               Director, Duke Global Health Institute
