of you who were unable to attend the inspiring talk by Stephen Lewis on October
2, we offer in this newsletter links to the Duke Chronicle coverage of the event,
and a link to a 15-minute video of highlights.
This
newsletter provides a link to our monthly DGHI Faculty Profile (this time of
Kim Blankenship), news of our new DGHI Member Duncan Thomas, and our new DGHI
Affiliate Will Mitchell, and information on several DGHI global health
educational programs that are accepting applications.

on October 2, inspiring students and faculty to take action to improve gender
equality and stem the epidemic of AIDS. Read

Leads DGHI Research into Gender, Poverty and Health Issues Dr. Kim
Blankenship previously worked with sex workers in New Haven, CT. At Duke, she will continue her research into

Health Accepting Applications The Duke
Global Health Institute is planning to offer a Master of Science in Global
Health beginning in the fall of 2009 (pending approval from the Duke Board of
Trustees). Interested students can apply online through the Duke Graduate

NEW: The
Doris Duke Charitable Foundation - Clinical Scientist Development Award: Deadline
October 15, 2008 The Doris
Duke Charitable Foundation - Clinical Scientist Development Award provides
grants to junior physician-scientists to facilitate their transition to
independent clinical research careers. Among twenty awards, the foundation will
give away approximately $62 million.
NEW: Provost's
Common Fund RFP 2009-10: Deadline Feb. 16, 2009 The
Provost's Common Fund was established to support interdisciplinary,
multidisciplinary, and transdisciplinary activities at Duke University
by providing seed money for innovative scholarly research and artistic activity
that clearly crosses the boundaries of departments, institutes/centers and/or
schools at Duke.
NEW: Additional
Duke-Durham RFP Preapplication Technical Assistance Workshop Because of
the considerable interest in the Request for Proposals (RFP) for grants to plan
innovative Duke-Durham partnered approaches to specific health issues in Durham County,
there will be an ADDITIONAL Preapplication Technical Assistance Workshop on
Friday, Oct. 10, from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at the Washington Duke Inn.
